Job Description


We are seeking a team\-oriented manager to lead and coordinate research in autonomy, sensor exploitation and related technologies\. This includes research in advanced signal processing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, image processing, pattern recognition, sensor fusion, and other advanced sensor exploitation approaches\. The work in this department is performed for a variety of mission customers across the Labs to enable sensor exploitation and autonomy for national security platforms such as hypersonics, airborne ISR \(intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance\), remote sensing, and unattended ground sensors\. This large programmatic role requires the manager be comfortable partnering with fellow managers and delegating to a team of experienced Principal Investigators\. The manager will be responsible for working with external sponsors for the Integrated Military Systems \(IMS\) program area, as well as internally with other program areas to build and maintain relationships and develop capabilities that support a variety of high\-impact missions\. The role requires the ability to set a strategic vision in R&D to build new capabilities, with an emphasis on achieving bold outcomes\. This manager must be able to establish and maintain strong synergistic relationships in a teaming environment with the 5400 management team, serve as a collaborative partner across Sandia, and execute Sandia’s and Division 5000’s Autonomy strategies\. The job will require working with staff and managers across Division 5000 as well as Divisions 1000, 2000, 6000 and 8000\.

Security and safety of operations within the department are critical\. The manager will be responsible for hiring, managing, and supporting the career development of a technically diverse workforce\. The manager must establish and maintain an exceptional career environment for strong workforce recruiting and retention, and for engaging staff in development and mentoring\.

On any given day, you may be asked to:

+ Coordinate and conduct research to discover, test, and implement sensor exploitation and autonomy solutions\. Research areas include, but are not limited to, advanced signal processing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, image processing, pattern recognition, sensor fusion, and other advanced sensor exploitation approaches\.
+ Guide the work of the department\.
+ Understand the work of the organization and connects the work and expertise of the organization with potential beneficiaries, collaborators, and customers\.
+ Steward the capabilities leveraged by the department\.
+ Promote excellence by managing and coordinating specific deliverables, overall program and project plans, budgets, structures, schedules, and staffing requirements\.
+ Ensure that customers’ needs are satisfied through the creation of trust\-based relationships\.
+ Apply organization knowledge and experience to independently judge work quality, performance, and alignment of results with customer expectations\.
+ Oversee and manages members of the workforce within the organization, including hiring, professional development, and assessment and performance management, consistent with the mission of the organization\.
+ Advise/mentor and support the development of staff members and provide guidance in self\-learning activities\.
+ This position requires the ability to travel and interact positively with a diverse set of SPP/SIPP sponsors, up to 2 times per month\.


99. Bachelor's and master's degree in a relevant STEM discipline, or a bachelor’s and a doctorate in a relevant STEM discipline, or bachelor's in a relevant STEM discipline plus four years relevant experience\.
99. In addition to the education requirements above, candidates must also have eight or more years of relevant experience\.
99. Active and ability to maintain a required US DOE Q security clearance\.
99. Ability to obtain and maintain US DOE SCI access, which may require a polygraph test\.


99. Two or more years of experience leading teams and managing R&D for programs to deliver high\-impact results\.
99. PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or other relevant discipline plus 5 years’ relevant experience\.
99. Current or previous SCI\.
99. Demonstrated ability to steward enduring capabilities\.
99. Successful experience in business development with the Department of Defense or similar government entities and understanding of the SPP/SIPP process and business model at SNL\.
99. Successful experience in delivering R&D technologies and products to US Government sponsors\.
99. Demonstrated leadership in developing customer requirements into technical research roadmaps\.
99. Demonstrated ability to lead teams in the research and development of novel technological solutions\.
99. Strong desire to support and work interactively with management teams, project teams, and customers\.
99. Excellent interpersonal, communication and time\-management skills\.
99. Demonstrated ability to manage diverse security requirements, from unclassified to highly classified environments\.

Department Description:

The Integrated Military Systems Center \(5400\) researches and develops pathfinder technologies that provide the United States an advantage in missile engagements and other military encounters\. Military Systems & Technologies \(5440\) creates key enabling autonomy and directed energy capabilities that differentiate these systems\. We aim to be a nationally\-recognized leader in autonomous systems, and our Autonomy strategic goals include:

+ Advance the state\-of\-the\-art in national security systems by developing sensor\-aided autonomous NG&C, machine\-aided fire control, adaptive endgame, and AI\-enabled mission analysis\.
+ Provide leadership and context for Lab initiatives in onboard autonomy for sensing systems, efficient machine learning, high\-confidence inference, rapid estimation and adaptive response, and distributed autonomy\.
+ Advocate for research in areas unlikely to be addressed by industry like autonomy in extreme environments and AI with sparse data sets\.
+ Leverage mod/sim capabilities to build reinforcement learning architectures and develop engagement strategies that classical human\-driven analysis would not discern\.

The Sensor Exploitation Applications department \(05448\) conducts research into sensor exploitation and autonomous system technologies for high\-consequence missions and high\-value systems\. Working with our internal partners, the department develops and fields sensor exploitation and autonomy solutions for defense and other government customers that leverage advanced sensors and signal processing, AI and machine learning, and embedded computing\. We perform research, engineering, and systems development, and we field implementations for a variety of military and national security applications\. The department teams internally to integrate expertise from across the Laboratories to develop systems that autonomously provide situational awareness and target characterization for military applications\.
