Job Description


An important area of application development and support is for Sandia’s computational engineering codes, which specifically include the Sierra suite developed by the Engineering Sciences Center 1500 \(funded by the DOE/NNSA’s Advanced Simulation and Computing program\), for use in some of the world’s most sophisticated scientific computing environments\. The Sierra user community includes not only analysts within Center 1500, but throughout Sandia and extends to external customers as well\. Sierra support is vital to practically all Sandia strategic business units in the areas of design, performance, and safety\. Applications of Sierra support a diversity of programs in Defense, National Security, Energy, and Laboratory Directed Research and Development \(LDRD\)\.

This position is for in\-depth technical support to the Sierra user and code\-development community, with an emphasis on thermal/fluid mechanics applications\. The selected individual will be a member of the Sierra\-help team and the overall 9326 scientific computing support team, as well as a Sierra code\-development team\(s\) member\. User support responsibilities include acting as a primary point\-of\-contact with and for the user community; providing expert guidance; resolving requests and/or issues directly when possible, while also acting as a liaison between users and code developers to request additional support, report bugs, maintain communications on progress of code fixes and enhancements; and conducting user training classes\. The individual will be expected to become a “super user” of these simulation tools, with a broad understanding of how to set up and run the codes, how to apply the codes \(capabilities and limitations\), and how to deal with common failures, computing\-system issues, and other user\-reported problems\. Additional activities can include testing across a range of applications and systems \(including very large high performance computers and advanced systems\) to improve robustness and performance; select code development; supporting code releases; and proactively influencing and/or enhancing the support infrastructure and the computational analysis environment to better serve users’ needs\.


1\) A graduate degree in mechanical, aerospace or related engineering, or other relevant discipline\.

2\) Training and/or experience with computational science/engineering, specifically including applications in thermal/fluid mechanics\.

3\) Basic computer skills related to software engineering and/or computer programming\.

4\) A current and active DOE Q\-clearance\.


1\) The willingness and ability to become an expert user of Sandia’s Sierra code\-suite and associated codes/utilities \(e\.g\., meshing and workflow management tools\)\.

2\) An enthusiastic interest in supporting users of simulation codes in a complex simulation environment\.

3\) Experience in the development and application of computational simulation utilizing discretization methods \(e\.g\., finite element method, finite volume method\)\.

4\) Experience with multi\-block, mixed\-element\-type unstructured and structured meshes and their modeling/post\-processing\.

5\) Experience with high fidelity, parallel computing\.

6\) Experience working in the UNIX/Linux operating system environment\.

7\) Advanced software engineering and computer programming skills; knowledge of C\+\+, Fortran, Python, XML, C\-shell and/or Bash shell scripting\.

8\) Familiarity and experience with Scrum agile software development\.

9\) Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills\.

10\) Excellent time management, multi\-tasking abilities\.

11\) Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment\.

12\) Familiarity with Sandia’s Sierra codes\.

13\) Familiarity and experience with Sandia’s high\-performance computing platforms and environments\.
