Job Description

:

We are seeking an Intern Summer \- Technical High School

Within this position, students will learn basic laboratory skills and will be part of a high\-performing research team\. Students will be expected to demonstrate increasing levels of independence and responsibility and must show a commitment to operate in and contribute to a safe operating environment\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Support technical programs in nanomaterials and/or biomaterials synthesis and characterization
+ Support technical programs in chemical synthesis, characterization, and precursor development for materials science applications
+ Assist in the development and evaluation of materials and processes for applications in additive manufacturing, renewable energy, etc\.

Required:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Attending a local high school or living with a parent or legal guardian near the work site if under 18 years of age
+ Enrolled full time, as defined by the school
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ Minimum 16 years of age
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ High levels of written and oral communication skills
+ Basic levels of comfortability and proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite
+ Entry level work skills such as reliability, critical thinking, and organization

Desired:

+ Advanced placement coursework in science or mathematics
+ Participation in hands\-on research through science fair, volunteer internships, or other activities that demonstrate planning, self\-motivation, organizational skills, etc\.
+ Excellent oral/written communication skills as demonstrated by coursework or special projects \(academic or extra\-curricular\)

Department Description:

Dept 1815\-1 is the Operations team of the Ceramic Materials Department \(1815\) that synthesizes, characterizes and improves the physical, optical and electronic properties and reliability of inorganic \(ceramic and glass\) materials and components\. A growing focus is underway in the area of bio\-nano materials for biosensors and drug delivery\. These materials exploit our broad experience in developing materials with tailored nanostructures that are often prepared using self\-assembly of biological\-inorganic composite materials\.An underlying theme of our work is the quest to understand the physical phenomena responsible for the observed effect\. We pursue partnerships with other Sandia organizations, universities, and industry to leverage our research investments, establish collaborations with experts in these fields and serve as Sandia's 'gateway' to these technologies\. Our work supports DOE Defense programs, other DOE research programs, work for other federal agencies, and industry\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\.
