Job Description

We are seeking an Intern Summer \- R&D Undergrad

This intern position will involve design and training of neural networks to model complex multivariable input/output for automated design of Z Machine electrical current pulses relevant to Dynamic Materials Program applications\. In our department, designers for experiments on the Z Machine first develop a prescribed current pulse shape for a “shot”\. From there, specific settings have to be determined for many dozens of parameters\. Currently, this is achieved through labor intensive human efforts, though the problem is primed for a machine learning solution, perhaps with deep learning algorithms\.The applicant will be provided with access and training on computational resources necessary to complete the assigned tasks\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Design and train a multivariable input/output neural network to meet a specific problem set
+ Develop specialized code necessary to perform the research objective
+ Work effectively as part of collaborative efforts

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited undergraduate program
+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

_Note: If you have not yet started your undergraduate program, please apply to a high school intern position\._

Additional requirements:

+ Undergraduate student in mathematics, computer science, cognitive science, or physics with strong interest and experience in machine learning and neural networks
+ Demonstrated ability to be self\-motivated and to work as part of a diverse team
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills

+ Demonstrated prior ability to design multivariable neural networks for specialized tasks
+ Experience with Bayesian methods and analysis techniques
+ Experience with the Linux operating system and an associated development environment
+ Computer programming experience with C, C\+\+, Python, or Mathematica

Department Description:

Research within the High Energy Density Physics \(HEDP\) Theory Department 1641 spans a broad range of topics with a common theme of gaining an improved understanding of physical processes at normal as well as extreme conditions of high densities and/or temperatures, pressures, magnetic fields, and rapidly changing states\. Major efforts of the department include developing simulations codes and high\-fidelity material models with predictive capabilities together with designing dynamic material and plasma physics experiments for Sandia's Z Machine\. Our research has both applied and fundamental dimensions – for example in the areas of electronic structure, shock physics, material science, planetary science and astrophysics\.

More specifically, work at the department involves fundamental research in materials\- and plasma physics: i\) developing magneto\-hydrodynamics simulation codes and applying them to study plasma physics and designing Z experiments; ii\) developing and applying methods based on quantum mechanics, primarily Density Functional Theory and Quantum Monte Carlo, for developing both an improved understanding and quantitative models for materials properties; and iii\) using and employing hybrid plasma simulation codes to study Electromagnetic Pulse \(EMP\) effects and laser\-matter interactions\.

Current research areas include Dynamic Material properties/NNSA Science Campaigns, Quantum Monte Carlo within Basic Energy Sciences/DOE Office of Science, Sandia Laboratory Directed Research and Development \(LDRD\), Advanced Simulation and Computing \(ASC\), and the program for fundamental science experiments on the Z machine\. The department has active collaborations with research groups at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Argonne National Laboratory as well as with academic institutions in the US and in Europe, for example University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, Harvard University, University of Rostock in Germany, Princeton University, Cornell University, and University of Texas at Austin\.

About Sandia:

Sandia National Laboratories is the nation’s premier science and engineering lab for national security and technology innovation, with teams of specialists focused on cutting\-edge work in a broad array of areas\. Some of the main reasons we love our jobs:

+ Challenging work withamazingimpact that contributes to security, peace, and freedom worldwide
+ Extraordinary co\-workers
+ Some of the best tools, equipment, and research facilities in the world
+ Career advancement and enrichment opportunities
+ Flexible schedules, generous vacations, strongmedical and other benefits, competitive 401k, learning opportunities, relocation assistance and amenities aimed at creating a solid work/life balance\*

\*These benefits vary by job classification\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.

If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE\-granted security clearance, a pre\-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation\. Applicants for DOE\-granted security clearances must be U\.S\. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position\.
