Job Description


Helps define future HPC architectural roadmaps by engaging in exploratory research and development of computer hardware, firmware, low level software \(i\.e\. network adapter drivers, operating system modules, mathematical subroutine libraries, communications libraries, etc\.\), and operating system environments\. Primary environment for this work is the Heterogeneous Advanced Architecture Platforms \(HAAPS\) testbeds composed of leading edge HPC architecture prototypes from all major computer hardware vendors \(ARM, HPE, Cray, IBM, etc\.\)

Constructing novel combinations of standard components resulting in candidate configurations for future HPC node configurations is a common approach to providing testable environments which provide accurate measurements of node level performance, and can be used to help project large system behavior\.

Will share system administration responsibilities with a team of highly experienced staff and contractor personnel on the HAAPS systems and other HPC platforms\.


+ Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Computational Science or closely related field with significant exposure to computer hardware design and performance measurement\.
+ Experience using common computer programming languages such as JAVA, C, C\+\+, Fortran, and scripting knowledge using Unix shell or interpretive languages such as Perl or Python\.
+ System administration experience in a Unix/Linux or Windows environment to include exposure to security configurations and network integration\.


+ Hands on development experience at the component level\.
+ Experience working in an R&D organization or Laboratory environment\.
+ Leadership skills and experience\.
+ Ability to obtain and retain a Q clearance\.

Department Description:

The Scientific Computing Systems Department provides centralized corporate resources including Terascale computer systems, high performance file systems, long term data storage, and full system management and operations services\. The department personnel routinely integrate new compute and storage resources onto various corporate or program specific networks, ensure compliance with and generate custom security plans and environments, and through partnerships with the Sandia Program Management Units set and enforces policies for priority and allocations of Institutional Computing platforms\.Growth areas include exploration of advanced architecture computer platforms, high security environments, non\-traditional computing systems serving Informatics or Emulytics or Big Data needs\. Staff members engage in independent research as well as the maintenance and operations work of systems administration on some of the largest computer systems in the world\.

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.
