Job Description

:

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years\. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment\.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\.

We are seeking a Post Doctoral Appointees to aid in the development of a novel optically pumped magnetometer\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work with a team of physicists and engineers to successfully advance the science of atomic sensing technologies so they can be employed as a practical sensing mechanism by overcoming challenges in physics and engineering\.
+ Support and advance the development of an optically pumped magnetometer by aligning optical systems, building experimental apparatus, developing computer\-based experimental control and data acquisition system, collecting and analyzing experimental data, and developing manuscripts for peer\-reviewed publication\.
+ Work with staff to develop emerging areas in atomic clocks, optically pumped magnetometers, and other applications of atomic physics\.

Required:

+ A PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field conferred within 5 years\.
+ Experience with most of the following: atomic physics, diode laser systems, optics, optical alignment, mechanical design, computer control of experiments, and automated data acquisition systems\.

Desired:

+ Exemplary academic record: undergraduate GPA of 3\.2/4\.0 and graduate GPA of 3\.5/4\.0
+ Excellent communication skills, written and oral\.
+ Excellent collaboration skills for working in a team environment\.
+ Experience with alkali hot\-vapor or cold\-atom atomic physics experiments\.
+ Experience with laser and optical systems\.
+ Experience with mechanical design, Solidworks, and machine tools \(lathe, mill, drill press, etc\.\)\.
+ Experience with Mathematica, Matlab, and/or LabView\.
+ Experience with data acquisition, signal processing, and data analysis\.
+ Track record of successful research and development in atomic physics\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\.
