Job Description


This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years\. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment\.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\.


We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to work with a team to develop algorithms, models and software to simulate thermally\-dominated, multi\-physics system response in complex applications\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Analyze, develop, implement, and evaluate models and algorithms for thermally\-dominated, transient, non\-linear heat conduction with chemically reactive materials, participating media radiation, dynamic enclosure radiation, and thermal contact
+ Analyze and improve performance of codes on next generation computing architectures
+ Support areas of development including: unstructured high\-order finite element methods applied to conduction\-dominated heat thermal analysis; algorithms for GPUs, manycore, and other advanced architectures; mesh adaptation for petascale and larger simulations; and coupling approaches for multi\-physics problems such as conjugate heat transfer and thermal mechanical applications
+ Perform application\-driven thermal analysis modeling and simulation support while contributing to research directions in support of Sandia’s weapons, space, and energy programs


+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or applied mathematics/computational engineering sciences \(with concentration in heat transfer and thermal analysis\)
+ R&D experience in heat transfer and thermal sciences
+ Experience with computational approaches \(finite element, finite difference, and finite volume methods\) for heat transfer simulations
+ Experience with code development
+ Experience working with a diverse team
+ Good communication skills as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer\-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance


+ Experience solving complex heat transfer problems, especially methods for predicting combined conduction/radiation and conduction/reacting material response
+ Experience in numerical simulation of coupled thermal/fluid or thermal/mechanical interactions
+ Experience with using advanced scientific software \(CFD, FEA, etc\.\) on massively parallel computing clusters
+ Experience with scientific software development, including working with development teams using object\-oriented frameworks
+ Experience with parallel programming for scientific software applications
+ Experience in next\-generation computing programming models \(e\.g\. OpenMP, CUDA, Kokkos\)
+ Experience with Matlab, scripting languages, and grid generation software
+ Experience with code and solution verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification

Department Description:

The Computational Thermal and Fluid Mechanics Department and the Thermal Sciences and Engineering Department work closely to develop and apply heat transfer and thermal analysis simulation software on a variety of high performance computing platforms to address a wide range of problems of national concern\. These codes will be used to perform highly detailed simulations for use in the design, development and qualification of nuclear weapons, as well as thermal projects funded through the U\.S\. Department of Defense, U\.S\. Department of Energy, and industry\. The code development efforts are focused on providing tools for analysts at Sandia and partner institutions\. The code areas are primarily in heat transfer, thermal analysis, participating media radiation, enclosure radiation, and fire environments\. Our broader code development team also develops simulation capabilities for modeling shock physics, solid mechanics, structural dynamics, compressible flow \(subsonic, transonic and hypersonic\), and incompressible fluid flow \(with capillary hydrodynamics, drying, porous flow \-\- multi\-physics\)\. Code teams are typically five to ten people, and strong interaction with the analysis teams is an important part of the code development process\. Our work spans fundamental research and development to engineering analysis of applied problems\. Our basic research activities focus on developing the scientific insights and physical models that will enhance our predictive simulation capabilities\. Representative research areas include: radiation heat transfer, heat transfer in the presence of decomposing foams, heat transfer associated with fires \(hydrocarbons, propellants, or composite materials\), and the coupling of heat transfer with structural response and failure\. Representative projects include assessing thermal response for weapons’ safety, modeling and controlling thermal environments for space applications, solar thermal/chemical applications, and manufacturing processes\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.
