Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\.

We are seeking postdoctoral appointment to conduct research and development toward the fabrication of new MEMS technologies\. We are interested in applicants with experience working in a semiconductor fabrication cleanroom on either \(1\) MEMS, or \(2\) CMOS or compound semiconductor devices, or \(3\) micro\-photonics, nanotechnologies, or other research devices\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Layout designs, create fabrication process flows, supervise lots through processing, analyze and resolve fabrication errors, statistical design of experiments to optimize process steps, and document and present results\.
+ Spend at least half time in a fabrication cleanroom environment\.
+ Deal with multiple projects and customers simultaneously\.
+ Conduct research and publish\.
+ Work in a team environment and contribute their knowledge to the team\.
+ Interact with other scientists and engineers to solve technical problems\.

This postdoctoral appointment is an opportunity to continue an engineer/scientist’s early career growth\. The desired characteristics below represent both potential starting points and opportunities for growth in this position\.

+ Ph\.D\. in mechanical or electrical engineering, or materials science, or a related science or engineering discipline conferred within 5 years\.
+ Experience working in a cleanroom environment\.

+ Research and development of novel MEMS\.
+ Fabrication of MEMS or other devices in semiconductor materials\.
+ Use of semiconductor fabrication tools and processes relevant to MEMS, such as, photolithography, film deposition, wet/dry etching, chemical\-mechanical polishing, or release\.
+ Design/layout of photolithography masks\.
+ Technical background and eagerness to learn new tools/techniques and to share knowledge with the team\.
+ Adaptability to changing tasks and projects as needed\.
+ Problem\-solving skills to develop creative technical solutions\.
+ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills\.
+ Eagerness to work in a multi\-disciplinary team environment\.
+ The addition of diversity to the department through background, experience, interests, etc\.

You will be part of the MEMS Technology Department \(http://mems\.sandia\.gov/\)\. We conduct research and development for advanced micro\-electromechanical systems that push the technology envelope for national security applications\.

Our broad R&D portfolio includes traditional MEMS sensors and actuators \(e\.g\., inertial sensors and switches\), piezoelectric devices \(e\.g\., ultrasonic transducers\), RF/acoustic devices \(e\.g\., RF filters\), opto/acoustic devices \(e\.g\., optical modulators\), magnetic and photovoltaic devices, and emerging technologies\. We also develop and maintain a comprehensive set of MEMS fabrication processes in Sandia's MESA Silicon and Micro Fabs, where we build MEMS with traditional bulk and surface micromachining, piezoelectric films, damascene and electrodeposited metals, through substrate vias, wafer bonding, and other semiconductor fab processes\.

MEMS is an interdisciplinary field\. So our team includes a great diversity of technical backgrounds, including electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics, nuclear engineering, and even civil engineering\. We highly value technical competence and entrepreneurial spirit\. We welcome diversity of all kinds and strive for an inclusive environment\.
