Job Description

:

We are seeking IT Solutions Architect networking and virtualization experts and early\-career staff to join our team as Emulytics Practitioners\. Emulytics Practitioner’s utilize mod/sim, virtualization and data analysis tools to build custom environments to help Sandia answer cyber related research and operations questions\. The ideal candidates will be highly motivated, creative, deeply curious, and passionate about using their technical skills to do meaningful work\. This role is focused on execution, and requires the ability to quickly learn new technologies\.

The Sandia Emulytics program develops and deploys a suite of emulation, modeling, and analytic tools to support the testing and evaluation of large\-scale, heterogeneous networks in the support of the US Government\. Our group is a unique team whose members develop and deploy operational cybersecurity capabilities, and also conduct cutting\-edge research in advanced cybersecurity technologies\. Our current research includes large\-scale virtualization, at\-scale emulation and analysis of cyber events, VM introspection, and automated discovery of network characteristics\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Design, build, and simulate at\-scale networks and network traffic;
+ Design and implement test and evaluation strategies for a variety of customer networks and projects;
+ Develop and deploy experiments to support the evaluation of new cybersecurity technologies;
+ Administer Emulytics compute clusters;
+ Work closely with Emulytics Engineers, other Emulytics Practitioners, and other research staff to help realize the implementation of novel Emulytics capabilities\.

Required:

+ Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, or a related technical discipline, with an emphasis on virtualization, networking, or cybersecurity; or bachelor’s degrees in these disciplines with at least four years’ relevant experience\.
+ Expertise in one or more of the following: system administration \(Linux/Unix or Windows\), network engineering, cloud computing, or emulation of large\-scale computer networks\.
+ Strong software development skills in multiple programming languages \(e\.g\., Go, C/C\+\+, Perl, Python\)\.
+ Familiarity or experience with virtualized systems \(KVM, ESX, Linux containers\)\.
+ Working knowledge of TCP/IP, HTTP, SSL, DNS, FTP, SSH, and other common Internet protocols
+ Proven skills with CLI, scripting \(Bash, Python\), and searching/parsing log files\.
+ Experience working with datacenter technology \(e\.g\., installing and configuring servers, switches, disk arrays\)\.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted Q\-level and SCI security clearance\. In order to obtain these clearances, U\.S\. Citizenship and polygraphs are required\.

Desired:

+ Experience in cybersecurity or cloud security is a big plus, but not required\.
+ Strong understanding of inter\-domain networking, including BGP, layer\-2 networking protocols \(e\.g\., OSPF, ARP\), DHCP, and TCP/IP networks in general\.
+ Experience with network architectures such as software defined networking and NFV, particularly as they relate to network virtualization\.
+ Experience with network management and orchestration technologies and protocols such as OpenFlow, Open vSwitch, and NETCONF\.
+ Hands\-on network\-level/packet\-level examination using tools such as tcpdump or wireshark\.
+ Experience with solving practical problems in science and engineering, especially those that involve encounters with real\-world data\.

Department Description:

The Information Security Sciences group \(8760\) includes work in advanced computer security research, operational network security, high\-performance computing research, decision analysis, and information extraction research\. This work is conducted for a wide range of government sponsors, including the Departments of Energy, Homeland Security, and Defense\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a SCI security clearance\.

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test\.
