Job Description


We are seeking R&D Cybersecurity emulation and networking experts and early\-career staff to join our team as Emulytics Engineers\. Emulytics Engineers utilize the skills of emulation and data analysis to create cyber\-related experiments\.The ideal candidates will be highly motivated, creative, deeply curious, and passionate about using their technical skills to do meaningful work\. This is an applied research role that requires excellent experiment design skills, communication skills, and an interest in helping to curate the technical vision for our Emulytics platform\.

The Sandia Emulytics program develops and deploys a suite of emulation, modeling, and analytic tools to support the testing and evaluation of large\-scale, heterogeneous networks in the support of the US Government\. Our group is a unique team whose members develop and deploy operational cybersecurity capabilities, and who also conduct cutting\-edge research in advanced cybersecurity technologies\. Our current research includes large\-scale virtualization, at\-scale emulation and analysis of cyber events, VM introspection, and automated discovery of network characteristics\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Design experiments to assess technical issues and potential solutions to Government challenges in cybersecurity and other areas;
+ Lead the development of test plans, and also participate in testing operations;
+ Analyze experimental data and synthesize findings into results and technical recommendations;
+ Develop software for new capabilities to model and simulate large networks;
+ Coordinate project teams consisting of Emulytics Engineers, Emulytics Practitioners, and other research staff, and also contribute effectively on similar project teams;
+ Collaborate with customers to understand needs and propose solutions;
+ Present results as appropriate at open conferences and classified meetings\.

Access to knowledge and data in this arena will require a security clearance\. Some travel is expected to meet with sponsors and support successful execution of programs\.


+ Bachelor’s and master's degrees in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline, with an emphasis on virtualization, networking engineering, data analytics, or HPC; or a bachelor's degree in these disciplines with at least four years' relevant experience\.
+ Expertise in one or more of the following: network architectures, network protocols and monitoring, network traffic analytics, and emulation of large\-scale computer networks\.
+ Familiarity with software development and programming languages \(e\.g\., Go, C/C\+\+, Perl, Python\)\.
+ Ability to model, simulate, and test heterogeneous, variable\-scale networks\.
+ Strong experiment design skills, including interest in developing standards and practices\.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted Q\-level and SCI security clearances\. In order to obtain these clearances, U\.S\. Citizenship and polygraphs are required\.


+ Experience solving practical problems in science and engineering, especially those that involve encounters with real\-world data\.
+ Experience in cybersecurity and/or cloud security\.
+ Strong understanding of inter\-domain networking, including BGP, layer\-2 networking protocols \(e\.g\., OSPF, ARP\), DHCP, and TCP/IP networks in general\.
+ Familiarity with networking architectures and concepts such as exchange points, SDN, and NFV\.
+ Experience with virtualized systems \(KVM, ESX, Linux containers\)
+ Hands\-on network\-level/packet\-level examination using tools such as tcpdump or wireshark\.
+ Working knowledge of TCP/IP, HTTP, SSL, DNS, FTP, SSH, and other common Internet protocols
+ Familiarity with system\-level development and kernel programming

The Information Security Sciences group \(8760\) includes work in advanced computer security research, operational network security, high\-performance computing research, decision analysis, and information extraction research\. This work is conducted for a wide range of government sponsors, including the Departments of Energy, Homeland Security, and Defense\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a SCI security clearance\.

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test\.
