Job Description


We are seeking a R&D Electrical Engineer

An opportunity exists for a test engineer to join the development program for Integrated Surety Architecture \- Safeguards Transporter Compatibility Retrofit \(ISA\-SCR\) and the Mobile Guardian Transporter \(MGT\) projects\.

The successful candidate will support the qualification effort to include planning and testing \(both subsystem and system level\) for Final ISA\-SCR design, two MGT prototypes, and an MGT pre\-production unit\. This position provides the opportunity to play a key role in the development of critical national security assets\.

This position will work in a team environment to design and develop test equipment at the Sandia Albuquerque site\. The selected candidate will be responsible for one or more of the systems and subsystems that make up the test equipment to be used for the development of ISA\-SCR and MGT\. Work will include collection of requirements, design/ integration through field installation\.

Partnering with other SNL or external organizations will be necessary to develop the system/subsystem requirements, implementation planning, and qualification activities\. As part of the design team, the test engineer will also develop operating and calibration procedures, acceptance test requirements, and perform periodic assessments of the system performance\. Additionally, this individual will be responsible for the development and execution of test plans and analysis of test results\. Testing will be performed on a National Instruments \(NI\) platform hosting LabVIEW test software\.


+ Plan, develop, build, deploy and sustain system and subsystem test equipment for the ISA\-SCR and MGT projects
+ Integrate with the various teams for developing tester requirements and requirement verification
+ Troubleshoot and resolve anomalies by differentiating the issue between the product and test equipment
+ Define and manage the lifecycle of test equipment
+ Develop and execute test plans on ISA\-SCR and MGT electronics and software with clear pass/fail criteria
+ Analyze test results from measurements to ensure pass/fail criteria are met
+ Work within a multi\-disciplinary team to ensure the development, test and integration of new capabilities into the fleet of Safeguards Transporters \(SGTs\) and next\-generation Mobile Guardian Transporters \(MGT\)

+ BS and MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or relevant field with evidence of strong academic achievement\.
+ Experience in developing and utilizing LabVIEW software\.
+ Experience with National Instruments hardware and drivers, including TestStand\.
+ Experience in the operation of standard laboratory test equipment \(oscilloscope, signal generator, digital multimeter, network analyzer, spectrum analyzer\)\.
+ A team player capable of handling multiple assignments, with strong customer focus and excellent oral and written communication skills\.


+ Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience\.
+ Active DOE Q\-level or DOD Top Secret security clearance\.
+ Experience in software development for test and measurement in multiple programming languages\.
+ Experience testing FPGA/HDL based systems\.
+ Experience testing microcontroller/embedded software based systems\.
+ Experience testing digital, RF, and/or satellite communications systems\.
+ Current National Instruments Certifications in LabVIEW and/or TestStand\.
+ Deep understanding of electronics, including data acquisition, signal measurement, schematics, and circuit design\.
+ Ability and interest to learn new technologies\.

Department Description:

The Communications and Electrical Systems Technology Department \(6622\) provides Command, Control and Communications software and hardware support to DOE's Office of Secure Transportation \(OST\) in addition to other NNSA customers involved in the transportation of critical assets\. These activities involve the integration of COTS and customized communication system solutions in mobile and fixed site applications to support the Sandia National Laboratories nuclear weapon community in efforts spanning DOE/DOD strategic weapons shipment, storage, and site security by detecting, assessing, and rapidly responding to known, evolving, and emerging design basis threats\. The department's subject matter experts contribute to solutions involving embedded command and control via terrestrial and wired networks, provide engineering analysis and design, thus helping to ensure the security of our nation's critical strategic assets and facilities\.
