Job Description


We are seeking a Computer Scientist to join the Computational Simulation group as a member of the Sierra Tool Kit \(STK\) team\. The STK team provides common libraries, algorithms, and utilities for the ASC\-IC application code teams\. Opportunity to work across many software teams exists including Solid Mechanics, Structural Dynamics, Thermal Fluids, Sierra Took Kit, Plato, and others\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Develop, implement, and verify algorithms and numerical techniques in support of the national security integrated codes applications of the laboratories
+ Work within agile software development environment team rooms on codes that involve research but are also production quality
+ Ensure codes are performant on next generation computing platforms at the petaflop level including work on advanced and applied research topics towards enabling exascale capability
+ Contribute to other efforts, such as: intrinsic verification and validation methods, inverse problems, reduced order models, failure modeling capabilities, such as X\-FEM, multi\-length scale sub\-modeling capabilities, robust and high performing contact algorithms, highly scalable equation solvers, or code design options for next generation computer hardware


+ Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related STEM discipline
+ Master's in Computer Science, Engineering or related STEM discipline
+ Experience with C\+\+ programming, UNIX/Linux environment
+ Experience with computer software engineering concepts
+ Experience with software quality and testing practices
+ Experience with high performance and parallel computation concepts \(e\.g\. distributed and shared memory, multithreading, OpenMP, MPI\+X\+Y, CUDA\)
+ Excellent communication skills as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer\-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences
+ Experience teaming with other software teams and users of software
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance


+ Experience developing and creating tests for large scale software applications
+ Knowledge and experience with Machine Learning
+ Experience with the finite element method
+ Experience with structural dynamics, parallel computing experience with MPI and threads, and agile software development experience
+ Experience with V&V concepts and practice
+ Experience with test driven development
+ Depth and breadth in several aspects of computational mechanics \(e\.g\., equations solvers, element formulations, multi\-scale approaches, data structures, coupled physics\)
+ Proven research capability
+ Strong background in applied mathematics, mechanics, and software development
+ Ability to excel within an agile software development team room environment

Department Description:

The Computational Solid Mechanics \(SM\) and Structural Dynamics \(SD\) Department \(1542\) develops advanced, massively parallel simulation codes for solid mechanics and structural dynamics and contributes to CompSim group\-wide software development\. This includes the development of advanced linear and nonlinear solution algorithms, contact mechanics, finite element formulations, and research in advanced computational algorithms for continuum and non\-continuum mechanics\. Department 1542 operates closely with other 1540 departments developing Thermal Fluids, meshing, V&V and uncertainty quantification, workflow, analyst interfaces, as well as development and operations support\. It also works closely with research organizations at Sandia\. Others utilize these codes for the NW mission, other areas of the Laboratory, DoD, and industry partners\.
