Job Description


We are seeking a R&D S&E, Systems Engineer who will support the Nuclear Safety and Nuclear Explosive Safety of Nuclear Weapons\. The successful candidate will assess conceptual and realized design details as they pertain to the implementation of nuclear weapon safety principles, particularly with respect to weapon safety elements and hazards\. Other activities include participation within various integrated teams \(e\.g\., Weapon Assessment Teams, Significant Finding Investigation committees, Weapon Project Teams, Nuclear Explosive Safety evaluations at Pantex\)\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Identify mechanical, electrical, and other hazardous forms of energy through detailed analysis of designs
+ Create and document technical justifications and rationale
+ Identify the safe operating environment for hazardous components
+ Develop technical subject matter expertise and working closely with peers at Sandia, Los Alamos, Pantex and Lawrence Livermore National Labs

This position requires travel to Pantex \(TX\), LANL \(NM\) and LLNL \(CA\)


+ Bachelor’s and Master's degree in relevant STEM discipline; or Ph D\. degree in a relevant STEM discipline\.


+ A dedication to support our unique nuclear weapon mission
+ Experience with electro\-mechanical component design, analysis and production
+ Experience with electrical circuit design and analysis \(e\.g\., power electronics, micro\-electronics, integrated circuits\)
+ A breadth of technical knowledge and are resourceful when solving deeply complex technical problems
+ Proven ability to work within multi\-disciplinary teaming environment
+ Effective communication and interaction with multiple levels of personnel in the Nuclear Security Enterprise
+ A desire to continuously learn and improve
+ Knowledge and experience in hazards/safety/failure analysis \(e\.g\., fault tree analysis, failure modes and effects analysis\)
+ Familiarity with nuclear weapon design, analysis, or testing, particularly with respect to nuclear safety
+ Experience with explosives and explosive safety

Department Description:

The Nuclear Safety Assessment Department is responsible for providing independent assessments for nuclear weapon safety activities at the Laboratories\. This includes the assessment of current and future safety components, subsystems, systems, ancillary equipment, testers, training, and operations in terms of modern requirements and safety standards\. Also included is the training and managing of the Sandia members of the NNSA Nuclear Explosive Safety Study team and the Sandia technical experts on the DoD Nuclear Weapon Safety Study Group\. This department is the liaison to NNSA for existing nuclear explosive safety orders, standards, and implementation plans\. The Department also provides nuclear safety experts to the Accident Response Group\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
