Job Description


We are seeking an Intern Summer \- R&D Grad

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work collaboratively with R&D staff with developmental research, analysis of technology and engineering options, project design, testing, formulating conclusions, data collection and analyzing experimental data

Qualified candidates will be placed in the Energy Systems area befitting the intern’s education, experience and interest\. This determination is made by the Hiring Manager but candidate should express a first and second area of interest from the following Stationary Power knowledge areas: Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Programs, Solar Power, Wind Energy Technology, Fossil/Geothermal, and Advanced Energy Conversion \(please see the following link: http://energy\.sandia\.gov/energy/ \)\.


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree
+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Official acceptance into one of these listed CIESESE \(Consortium for Integrating Energy Systems in Engineering and Science Education\)accredited universities' graduate programs in a science, engineering, or math \(SEM\) discipline:

+ University of Turabo \- Gurabo, PR
+ University of New Mexico – Albuquerque, NM
+ University of Puerto Rico – Mayaguez, PR
+ University of Texas – El Paso, TX
+ Candidates must be pursuing a master’s degree or higher in a science, engineering, or math \(SEM\) related field
+ Students must have demonstrated strong skills within their degree discipline
+ All candidates should have demonstrated ability to develop and present ideas and results in oral and written form


+ General knowledge of technical principles and processes
+ Understanding of the use a variety of research tools
+ Good oral and written communication skills
+ Ability to contribute in a team environment
+ General knowledge of project management
+ General knowledge and good understanding of a suite of software, including Microsoft Office

Department Description:

The Advanced Nuclear Energy Programs Group conducts research and development in advanced technologies for both the front\- and back\-end of the nuclear fuel cycle to ensure energy and environmental stability in the interest of National Security\. The Advanced Nuclear Energy Program Group's primary customer is the U\.S\. Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Energy \(DOE\-NE\)\. This Group also provides integration of DOE\-NE's programs across the Laboratories\. Major DOE\-NE Programs at Sandia include: Nuclear Launch Safety Analysis, Small Modular Reactors, Advanced Energy Conversion System Development, Fuel Cycle Systems Engineering, Used Fuel Disposition, and Advanced Modeling and Simulation\. The Group also manages and operates several unique testing facilities used for experimental work related with energy conversion systems, nuclear fuel cycle safety studies, and radiochemical and water chemistry\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.
