Job Description


This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years\. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment\.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\.


We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee with experience in vibration and acoustics research\. This is an opportunity to build upon current research, with some discretion in work directions\. Opportunities exist for teaming with in\-house computational teams and large\-scale test systems\.

Key functions of this role include but are not limited to:

+ Working in a dynamic multidisciplinary teaming environment with a focus on multi\-input multi\-output experimental 6 degree of freedom vibration research
+ Perform work spanning the entire research \- development \- applications domain
+ Leading efforts to identify and implement both technical and operational laboratory improvements Contributing to research projects and publication of results
+ Implementing work planning and control processes to assure safe, secure, and high quality operations
+ Traveling as required to support research and conferences


+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in engineering or related STEM field
+ Experience with structural dynamics, mechanical vibrations, or modal analysis
+ Laboratory experience, including use of vibration shakers, accelerometers, and data acquisition systems
+ Good communication skills as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer\-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L clearance


+ Ability to work independently and to integrate effectively into a dynamic multidisciplinary teaming environment
+ Commitment to engineering excellence and continuous improvement, including a dedication to performing high quality work safely
+ Demonstrated leadership skills and experience working in a collaborative environment within a multidisciplinary team
+ Experience using a laser doppler vibrometer
+ Experience with Matlab
+ Experience with mechanical design
+ Experience on projects including design\-build\-test
+ Experience with designing, conducting, and/or interpreting data from dynamic mechanical tests
+ Active DoE clearance

Department Description:

The Vibration/Acoustics Simulation Department, 01521, within the Engineering Sciences Center, 01500, specializes in replicating normal, hostile, and abnormal environments through tailored and controllable vibration/shock, acoustic, and thermal tests\. In addition to vibration and acoustics capabilities, the department also has the ability to accurately take mass properties measurements for small and large\-scale test articles and subject components to HALT and HASS\. Test data is used to characterize the structural response of systems to a variety of environments\. The work includes integration with environments engineering and advancement of diagnostics and experimental capabilities\. These integrated capabilities support applied and fundamental laboratory research, model validation, experimental model development, and characterization of hardware behavior during operational environments in the development, qualification, and acceptance phases of a broad range of national security missions that include nuclear weapons deterrents, satellite assets, missile defense, conventional military technologies, infrastructure and energy security, and other applications\.

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.
