Job Description

:

An Engineering Support Technologist is needed to support the growing lithium ion and lithium primary battery projects in Department 2545\. This department provides engineering design and development support to the Power Sources Technology Group \(PSTG\)\. The Power Sources Technology Group provides cradle to grave research, engineering design/development and production of power sources used for NNSA, DoD, DOE, NASA and commercial applications\. Our products are based on several different battery chemistries including both lithium primary and secondary cells\. Battery management systems are required to efficiently and safely operate lithium\-ion batteries and the ability to design and test these are becoming an increasingly important part of our work\. These systems are used to continuously monitor cell performance and to ensure safe operation\. The electronics design is unusually challenging because of the need to integrate with batteries, which have physical responses that are difficult to simulate\.

The individual selected will be a member of Product Realization Teams \(PRTs\) producing, testing and delivering power source products in a dynamic environment\. This assignment would include setting\-up and conducting experiments; preparing, modifying, assembling test equipment; evaluating materials and supporting the assembly of prototype hardware or test articles\. Other activities include helping in the analysis and interpretation of test data, and performing literature searches\. The successful candidate will be expected to work effectively in a team environment as well as being able to work independently while meeting goals and deliverables\. Training and mentoring will be provided\.

Required:

99. Associate’s degree in an engineering or science discipline; or equivalent combination of education and work experience\.
99. Previous experience working safely in lab environment\.
99. Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level secuirty clearance\.

Desired:

99. Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or science discipline\.
99. Experience working with and testing batteries, in particular lithium primary and secondary batteries\.
99. Previous experience working in accordance with Sandia ES&H policies\.
99. Experience in the assembly and testing of battery management systems or other electronic systems/sub\-systems\.
99. Basic understanding of typical lab instrumentation along with electrical and mechanical trouble\-shooting skills\.
99. Demonstrated strong problem solving skills\.
99. Evidence of strong written and communication skills\.
99. Active DOE security clearance\.

Department Description:

Department 2545, Power Sources Design and Development is part of the integrated Power Sources Technology Group\. The Power Source organization provide cradle to grave R&D, engineering, and production of power sources including thermal batteries, thermoelectrics, and lithium primary and secondary cell batteries, as well as research into many other new power source technologies\. Power source technology is a growing need area both within the NW SMU and in the Energy, Climate and Infrastructure Security \(ECIS\) SMU\. While the primary customer of the Power Sources and Metrology Group is NNSA, both business areas are growing a customer base including DoD, NASA, other DOE offices, and commercial entities\.

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
