Job Description


The Analytical Technologies Department is searching for a responsible and conscientious undergraduate year\-round student intern researcher, with the ability and aptitude to work in a team\-oriented experimental materials research laboratory led by Sandia researchers\. The successful candidate will be a student pursuing college studies in chemistry, physics, materials science, or engineering; and have strong academic performance with the ability to be effectively mentored by more experienced researchers\. The ideal candidate will have relevant science course experience and relevant “hands on” experimental experience or aptitude commensurate with their education level\.

The candidate will be trained in the use of characterization tools and technique, and will help staff and technologists perform general laboratory support duties in one or more of the following areas:

+ Assist with the preparation of samples for materials characterization
+ Learn and utilize materials characterization tools such as optical microscopes, SEM, mass spectrometers, FT\-IR, DTA, TGA, XPS and AES
+ Assist with testing material properties \(X\-ray diffraction, etching, polishing, mechanical and electrical testing\)
+ Basic wet chemistry techniques, chemical synthesis, and materials characterization


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Willingness to obtain a RAD worker II certification
+ Good verbal and written communication skills
+ Ability to contribute in a team environment
+ General knowledge and good understanding of a suite of software, including Microsoft Office \(Excel, Word, PowerPoint\)
+ Conscientious and detail oriented


+ Have experience or desire to work in a materials/chemistry/chemical or mechanical laboratory in general

Department Description:

The Analytical Technologies \(AT\) Department is responsible for performing chemical and physical testing of materials and components for the Neutron Tube and Neutron Generator Production Programs within the Neutron Generator Enterprise\. The Department specializes in defect/failure analysis, surface chemistry, radiochemistry, metallurgy and Ceramics, wet\-chemistry and instrumental analysis, gas dynamics and mass spectrometry and particulate contamination control\. We provide technical expertise, consultation and analysis capabilities required to support the Centers mission\. The neutron generator enterprise utilizes ceramics, metals, polymers and thin films to make devices that operate at the limits of materials performance\. Materials related issues can limit the performance of existing devices, and must be fully understood before implementing new designs\. The research environment is dynamic with projects spanning processing, joining, mechanical, chemical and electrical testing of materials, and multi\-material systems\. The AT team is a mix of staff with advanced degrees in Materials, Chemistry and Surface Science, and several technologists with similar technical backgrounds\. The work of the department is mix of problem solving activities, advanced characterization of new and legacy materials, and forward looking research\. The department has several collaborative projects with staff within Sandia and other national labs\. Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.
