Job Description


As a Federally\-Funded Research and Development Center \(FFRDC\), Sandia National Laboratories is continually asked to help address the country’s most pressing national security needs\. Sandia helps meet these challenges through the Information Operations program, which is a science and technology R&D partner for multiple US Government organizations\.

To this end, we seek to fill multiple positions in our technical staff for researching systems\-level, security\-relevant software and embedded system topics, with a particular focus on: vulnerability assessment, exploit mitigation, and system analysis\.

We provide opportunities for leadership \(technical and personnel\), travel \(domestic and international\), training \(internal and external\), and collaboration \(academic, industry, and government\)\. Candidates applying on this requisition may be interviewed and/or hired into one of several organizations at Sandia National Laboratories\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Develop, use, and improve tools to conduct program understanding and vulnerability assessment research;
+ Reverse engineer software applications, operating systems, and/or embedded systems;
+ Conceptualize, propose, and/or execute high\-risk, multi\-year research and development thrusts;
+ Collaborate with fellow researchers across the lab and at partner organizations to deeply understand and assess the security\-relevant aspects of systems\.


+ Bachelor’s degree in a relevant STEM discipline;
+ Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or other closely related STEM field; in lieu of a Master’s degree can have a Bachelor’s in STEM and four years of relevant experience;
+ Experience or training in one or more of the following areas: operating systems internals, operating systems development, reverse engineering, software vulnerability assessment, computer networking, computer architecture, cryptographic systems or protocols, or compilers;
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance\.


+ Experience or training in one or more of the following areas: auditing source code, building tools to support vulnerability analysis, fuzzing complex programs, analyzing network protocols, developing Windows or Linux drivers, formal analysis/verification of software or protocols, or similar;
+ Capture the flag \(CTF\) experience;
+ Experience with C/C\+\+, scripting languages \(e\.g\., Python\), and assembly \(e\.g\., ARM, MIPS, PowerPC, 8051, x86\);
+ Familiarity with state\-of\-the\-art mitigations \(ASLR, DEP, sandboxing, code signing, CFI, etc\.\) and the attack techniques they are intended to thwart \(overflows, information disclosure, ROP, etc\.\);
+ Experience using analysis, reverse engineering, and debugging tools such as angr, BAP, IDA Pro, gdb, Hopper, libVMI, lldb, LLVM sanitizer, otool, AFL, PINtools, or windbg;
+ A demonstrated ability to develop technical ideas and results and present them in oral and written form;
+ Ability to perform effectively in a highly collaborative and team\-oriented environment;
+ Aptitude and desire to lead \(technical direction, project leader, program leader, mentor, or educator\);
+ Active DOE/DOD/SCI security clearance\.

Department 5838, Cyber Initiatives, is engaged in cybersecurity research for national security and works across the technology spectrum including embedded, mobile, desktop, and enterprise systems, as well as globally connected networks of networks and high performance computing\. It is aligned with the Information and Systems Research and Assessments group's mission to conduct vulnerability assessments of information systems and related cyber technologies\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\.
