Job Description


We are seeking a R&D S&E, Mechanical Engineer to work in a multidisciplinary team environment in designing and developing advanced components, subsystems, and systems for national defense programs, homeland security, and non\-defense applications\. The candidate will work with a wide variety of technical staff including electrical engineers, designers, analysts, materials scientists, fabrication specialists, test personnel as well as program/project managers\. The items being developed include electronics devices and mechanical structures for those electronics products\. The candidate should be familiar with software tools for design, analysis, and modeling/simulation\. Mechanical engineering areas of emphasis include design, applied mechanics, product qualification, and advanced materials\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

• Evaluate mechanical design definitions for feasibility, manufacturability, and assembly

• Work integrally and engage with related organizations to negotiate requirements and constraints

• Perform various simulations \(i\.e\. structural, thermal, analytical, etc\.\) to prove mechanical robustness

• Conduct material and manufacturing process evaluations

• Complete stack\-up tolerance analyses

• Convey design intent to other agencies thru proper GD&T implementation and inspection/acceptance criteria

• Develop test plans to validate design characteristics and oversee testing

• Partner with our production agency to mature design for manufacturability


• Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM field

• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance


• Active DOE Q clearance

• 2 years’ previous experience in mechanical engineering product development

• The ability to create innovative solutions to difficult technical problems

• Works well in team\-oriented environment and work cooperatively with other internal organizations, as well as external production facilities and suppliers

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

The Weapon Subsystems I department develops and supports advanced electronic and mechanical subsystems for use control, enhanced surveillance, material monitoring and other high consequence applications requiring exceptionally high confidence, quality and reliability\. These projects enhance the safety and security of assets that are critical to US national security, including the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile\.

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
