The Post\-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph\.D\. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee\. The Ph\.D\. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment\. These assignments are for a one\-year period, with the option at management’s discretion to serve no more than five additional one\-year assignments\.

We are seeking a postdoc chemist to join our efforts developing new organic molecule based radiation detection materials\. The successful post doctoral candidate is expected to have knowledge and experience related to the design, synthesis, and characterization of small organic molecules\. The successful candidate will gain experience from an interdisciplinary team of scientists and is expected to continually grow into a researcher branching into multiple disciplines\. The candidate must possess an enthusiasm for fundamental research as well as applied science, show aptitude with verbal and written communication and have a publication record commensurate with the above activities\.


PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics or in a relevant Science or Engineering field\.

Experience in organic synthesis and characterization, including inert\-atmosphere techniques, NMR, and mass spectrometry\.

Willingness to work with sealed radioactive sources \(training will be provided\)\.


Extensive experience related to the synthesis and photophysical characterization of luminescent organic and organometallic compounds\.

Understanding of the electronic properties of luminescent compound\.

Familiarity with computational methods relevant towards the design of new scintillating materials\.

Demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary team as well as mentor undergraduate and graduate interns\.

Strong publication record in peer reviewed journals and communication of results at scientific conferences\.

Demonstrated creativity in original research\.

Ability to work independently, while integrating effectively into a diverse, multidisciplinary team environment\.

Department Description:

The Radiation Effects and Detection Department applies radiation physics and chemistry to solve a variety of national security problems\. Typical projects include: synthesis, characterization, and modeling of novel scintillators that operate via new physical mechanisms; materials science of semiconductor radiation detectors; modeling of radiation transport and radiation effects on materials and devices; radiography/non\-destructive evaluation of complex devices and materials; developing novel system architectures and multiplatform analysis software to detect radiation sources; and developing components and systems for national security applications\. The department supports a number of government agencies and expects to grow with new customers\.

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
