Job Description


Position for R&D Electrical Engineer to participate as the technical interface to product realization teams and the commercial supply base for the design and delivery of electrical parts/components used in nuclear weapon design, development and production activities\.

+ Participates in the product realization process \(design through delivery\); including early engagement in the development phase to define, validate, and clarify requirements for testers and equipment for use in nuclear weapon systems\.
+ Leads the identification, development and qualification of production processes; assessing the production processes/capabilities in meeting nuclear weapon system requirements\.
+ Leads efforts to enhance fundamental understanding of NG requirements, defining and conducting experiment work to close knowledge gaps and improve design definition\.
+ Anticipates and manages risk \(i\.e\. process and technology development, etc\.\); identifying viable alternates and leading the technical evaluations and decision making process\.
+ Manages product design definition \(drawings, specifications, etc\.\) through the product life cycle \(design\-development\-delivery\)\.
+ Employs quality management systems and techniques; developing and managing comprehensive verification/qualification plans and defining acceptance criteria\.
+ Manages multiple organizational interfaces; internally and externally\.
+ Some travel required\.


+ Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electro\-Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering discipline and a bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics \(STEM\) discipline\.
+ Active DOE Q\-Level Clearance


+ Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering\.
+ Experience defining testing/inspection methods and interpreting results\.
+ Experience in the manufacturing and testing of printed wiring assemblies and/or cable assemblies\.
+ Experience in application of the scientific method; gathering, analyzing and presenting technical data for decision making/problem solving purposes\.
+ Desire to leverage engineering expertise in the weapons product realization process; cradle to grave\.
+ Candidate must possess well\-developed interpersonal and communication skills; with an ability to work in a diverse team environment\.
+ Demonstrated leadership skills\.
+ Demonstrated ability to work in a fast\-paced/schedule driven environment\.
+ Excellent oral communication and technical writing skills, with the ability to develop and present ideas and results in oral and written form\.
+ Basic knowledge of design for manufacturability \(DMF\), Lean/Six Sigma and continuous improvement and their application\.

Department Description:

The Neutron Generator Sub\-assembly \(NGSA\) and Electronic Neutron Generator \(ELNG\) Value Stream at Sandia National Laboratories develops, qualifies and integrates state\-of\-the\-art technology insertions that realize a broad range of components and related subassemblies used in the design, development and realization of highly reliable neutron generators for the Nuclear Weapons Complex with demonstrated value, performance, and confidence that meet customer requirements\. We deploy technical leadership in various engineering disciplines \(e\.g\. Mechanical, Chemical, Materials Science, Industrial and Electrical\) to identify, develop and mature technology solutions using demonstrated rigorous product and process realization methodologies\. Our capabilities range from component assembly and fabrication, abrasive blasting/cleaning, inspection, laser welding and marking, soldering, encapsulation, final dimensioning and machining, x\-ray radiography, thermal spraying, conformal coating, environmental conditioning and functional testing\.

This is accomplished through the integrated planning for product realization, manufacturability and certification of neutron generators and neutron generator related products that meet the needs of our customers and the security of the nation\.
