Job Description

:

The Post\-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph\.D\. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee\. The Ph\.D\. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment\. These assignments are for a one\-year period, with the option at management’s discretion to serve no more than five additional one\-year assignments\. Extensions of up to six years require employee's manager approval\. Six years or greater requires employee's manager and HR VP approval\.

The Reacting Flow Research Department at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, CA seeks a postdoctoral researcher with a strong computational science background who will pursue research in methods for uncertainty quantification and predictive simulation, including probabilistic computational methods for sensitivity analysis, calibration, validation and optimal experimental design\. The postdoc will contribute primarily to the development and application of uncertainty quantification tools for highly complex climate models that are typically employed at the Department of Energy’s Leadership Class supercomputing facilities\. Beyond this primary project, the postdoc fellow will have opportunities to expand his/her research portfolio by developing or applying probabilistic computational methods in a wide range of applications that include, but are not limited to, biochemical models, stochastic dynamical systems, and complex networks\. The postdoc will work under the supervision of one or more research staff and will collaborate with other researchers at Sandia, other national laboratories, and in academia\. Research programs are expected to result in major impact and recognition within the academic research community, as well as relevant contributions to the long\-term energy and environmental mission objectives of the U\.S\. Department of Energy\.

Required:

This position requires a PhD in engineering, computer science, physical sciences, or mathematics\. Successful candidates must have \(1\) expertise in uncertainty quantification in computational models, and \(2\) some experience in parallel programming, hardware architecture and C\+\+/Python\.

Desired:

Applicants are desired with strong verbal and written communication skills and an ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary research team\. In addition, expertise in climate modeling is desirable\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.
