We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join a dynamic, multidisciplinary team with a focus on solid mechanics, nonlinear dynamics, and coupled thermal\-mechanical finite element analysis\. This team’s work covers the full spectrum of the research \- development \- applications domain, and the initial focus of this role will be applications work\. This is a great opportunity for an individual to engage with knowledgeable interdisciplinary teams and fill a unique broad\-based role, with an opportunity to develop new theories and methodologies involving the application of nonlinear dynamics, multi\-scale and coupled\-physics approaches, and uncertainty quantification for mechanical components\.
Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:
+ Teaming with in\-house \(high\-fidelity multi\-physics\) code development teams
+ Working on very challenging problems utilizing world\-class computational resources
+ Working with teams to perform finite element analysis for mechanical components in dynamic environments
+ Engaging with customers to understand requested work and resources needed
+ Dealing with changing requirements and effectively assessing priorities for multiple needs using an Agile Kanban approach
+ Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
+ Experience with solid mechanics and strength of materials
+ Experience with finite element modeling techniques
+ Experience with model meshing
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance
+ Ability to set priorities and manage multiple funding streams
+ Experience working in a collaborative environment within a multidisciplinary team
+ Knowledge of experimental techniques and data interpretation for material characterization
+ Extensive knowledge and experience of computer programming and code development with object\-oriented languages, Python and C\+\+
+ Experience with Cubit and Sierra SM/SD
+ Knowledge or experience in Agile Kanban methodology
+ Experience in performing finite element simulations of materials and structures subjected to complex and extreme loading conditions, up to and including failure modeling
The Component Science and Mechanics Department \(1556\) provides state\-of\-the\-art mechanics/dynamics research and science\-based engineering solutions for component development and assessment\. Focus areas for the department include: viscoelastic mechanics, joining, deformation, fracture, failure, mechanical interfaces, constitutive materials models, reduced order models, multi\-physics/multi\-scale models, component reliability, margin assessment, and uncertainty propagation\. Areas of active interest include: interconnects and encapsulation, fatigue and fracture, energy dissipation at contacts, microstructural mechanics, shock and vibration, crack initiation and propagation, and adaptive structures\. Computational and physical simulations, including solid mechanics and structural dynamics for both linear and nonlinear systems, are utilized in a dynamic multidisciplinary teaming environment\.
