Job Description


We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to work on Computational Shock Physics projects\.

Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:

+ Conduct shock physics analyses in support of SNL customers, including but not limited to Nuclear Weapon development
+ Contribute to the development of the SNL CTH shock physics code


+ Master's degree in relevant discipline, plus a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant STEM discipline
+ 2 years’ relevant experience
+ Experience with continuum mechanics, shock physics theory, strength of materials, and solid mechanics
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance


+ Experience with CTH or other shock physics/explicit dynamics codes to solve engineering problems
+ Experience modeling blast and/or penetration of structures, high\-velocity impact, explosives and explosively driven fragmentation
+ Understanding of the physics of explosives
+ Experience developing material models that predict the response of materials under shock and high strain rate loadings
+ Knowledge of strength, and damage and EOS models
+ Experience in the development of computational mechanics/physics codes
+ Knowledge and experience with software engineering
+ Understanding of compressible fluid mechanics
+ Understanding of multi\-phase flow
+ Understanding and experience with explicit numerical techniques for high strain rate and large deformation application
+ Knowledge and experience with software engineering

Department Description:

Department 1555, Computational Shock Physics, has expertise in the computational simulation of extreme mechanical events such as blast and impact\. The Department conducts research and development in the area of computational shock physics, incorporating the results into the CTH shock physics code, which is owned by the Department\. In addition, the shock physics and solid mechanics analysts in the Department conduct research, development and application of computational simulation of the response of structures to extreme mechanical events for a wide range of projects aligned with Sandia's broad national security mission in cooperation with the other departments in the Engineering Sciences Center\.

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
