Job Description

:

We are seeking a Lab Support Technologist to join a team fielding fiber\-coupled diagnostic systems on the Z machine and other pulsed power machines \(Mykonos, Thor\)\. These systems measure optical emission from the target region and power flow surfaces to understand target and machine performance\. This role will support hundreds of experiments per year\.

Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:

+ Perform diagnostic setup and instrumentation, timing verification, diagnostic configuration, and data archiving
+ Participate in the development of new optical and laser\-based detection capabilities for experiments on the Z machine
+ Set up and perform lab\-scale experiments to demonstrate diagnostic system performance, conduct detailed measurements to diagnose and troubleshoot, and collaborate with the team to develop and execute related plans
+ Operate existing streak and gated CCD camera systems in the visible spectrum
+ Operate laser systems
+ Design, assemble and install optical imaging systems
+ Assemble of fiber optic systems
+ Communication frequently and effectively with peers
+ Collaborate across a diverse team
+ Maintain excellent organization of data, records, and other associated documentation
+ Perform all duties in compliance with operational safety, security and quality guidelines

Required:

+ Associate’s Degree in a STEM discipline or equivalent experience
+ Experience with optical, mechanical, electrical and/or computer systems
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance

Desired:

+ Communication and people skills to work in a team environment
+ Familiarity with gated MCP imagers, streak cameras, cabling, dosimetry, fiber optics, and testing/experimenting methodologies is strongly desired
+ Computer skills related to data recording, analysis and CADD
+ Experience at Z or other similar large high hazard facility
+ Machine shop experience

Department Description:

Department 1675, Z Diagnostics, develops and fields state\-of\-the\-art diagnostic systems for measuring conditions created in high\-energy\-density science experiments on the Z Machine\. The department is composed of a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and technologists that work together in a collaborative environment to develop and field time\-, space\-, and spectrally\-resolving diagnostics with an emphasis on instruments that measure x\-ray emission with nanosecond to picosecond time resolution\. The department interacts closely with scientists from around the world that work on Z to pursue research in the areas of condensed matter physics, atomic physics, shock physics, radiation transport, planetary science, and inertial confinement fusion\. Opportunities also exist to develop and field new diagnostics for the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory\.
