Job Description


Under general supervision, performs routine to moderate difficult assignments of limited scope, which require the application of environmental law, regulations, and guidance documents, as well as environmental sampling techniques, and procedures in carrying out a sequence of related environmental tasks. Assignments involve some unusual or difficult problems requiring job knowledge and abilities beyond entry level.



May provide some technical guidance to less experienced scientist/ biologist/ and planners or others who assist in specific assignments.


Requires a 4-year Bachelor's Degree in environmental science, geology, biology or equivalent.


Requires a minimum of 3 years of work experience in science related field. Must be cognizant of the different environmental laws, regulations and guidances for project completion under the National Environmental Policy Act, or project completion under a specific environmental media, such as water, wastewater, solid waste, noise, cultural resources, or air. Effective in interpretation of laws, rules, regulations and guidelines.


* Assist with determining client requirements and developing scope of services, deliverables, instructions, reports, and related documents.
* Assist with oversight of subcontracts.
* Assist with the evaluation of scope and suggest changes.
* Consults with personnel concerning environmental issues related to field conditions, sequencing, and scheduling of field activities.
* May plan, schedule, coordinate, and oversee the work of lower-level scientist and specialists who assist with particular projects.
* Provides conceptual planning input for preliminary project estimates.
* Knowledge of the majority of environmental law, regulations, and guidelines.
* Knowledge and ability to conduct necessary site visits and audits, with limited supervision.
* Assist in planning, development, writing and production of technical and graphic reports.
* Ability to use technical reference materials, exercise initiative to solve environmental issues.
* Ability to communicate effectively, analyze and solve problems, follow simple engineering calculations, deal courteously and effectively with the public, work under varying weather conditions, maintain effective working relationships with staff and clients.
* Working knowledge of different environmental systems.
* Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power-Point.
* Knowledge of environment resources and mapping sources.


Ability to read, analyzes, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, governmental regulations, business periodicals, technical procedures, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries from clients, regulatory agencies, or other staff members, and the public. Ability to write clear and concise reports, business correspondences and procedures. Ability to effectively present information and response to questions from clients, managers, scientists and others.


Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. Ability to apply concepts such as cost and schedule analysis techniques.


Occasionally, will conduct or participate in field trips to operating facility, construction sites, or project sites. This requires the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb and balance. Lifting of 25 pounds may be required. It also requires clear close and distance vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.


Normal work environment will be a business office with moderate noise. Occasionally, will conduct or participate in field trips to project sites. This may require exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, work near moving mechanical parts, vibration, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals and airborne particles.
