Overview of the TransNet Project Office

TransNet, a voter-approved half-cent sales tax program, is a critical source of funds for local transportation projects and generates funds for public transit, highway, and local street and road improvements. As part of the role SANDAG has as the administrator of the TransNet program, staff are responsible for overseeing the design and implementation of projects. The intern in the Project Office will assist with various program and project management duties.

Intern Responsibilities

With the guidance and mentoring of senior staff, this position will provide a "hands-on" learning experience in capital project management. Examples of intern responsibilities include:

* Review consultant invoices for accuracy; coordinate between consultants and project managers to resolve billing disputes; provide account coding on incoming invoices and coordinate with other groups/sections to ensure timely payment.
* Assist with maintaining transportation improvement project budget control worksheets, comprehensive project databases, tracking logs, and documentation.
* Assist with budget and invoice cost analysis.
* Support the development of innovative solutions designed to increase efficiency in data collection, management, and analysis.
* Assist with the preparation of progress reports, other special reports, and general correspondence.
* Assist with updating contract information in the accounting system and with maintaining and updating contract files.
* Assist with data entry and project controls implementation to support the scheduling of capital transportation projects.

Qualifications

* Graduate or final-year undergraduate coursework in public or business administration, planning, engineering, project management, finance, or a related field.
* Demonstrated experience performing a range of administrative support services; ability to maintain accurate records.
* Ability to communicate with various audiences using exceptional interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
* Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, high degree of accuracy, and ability to multitask and work on several projects simultaneously.
* Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to perform a variety of tasks typical of an entry-level project management position.
* Knowledge of current issues and trends related to regional transportation planning and project development.
* Advanced computer skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access, and Internet research.
* Knowledge of data resources and tools; experience supporting the compilation of data for large, complex databases is desirable.

Hours, Pay, and Perks

Interns are paid $13.50 per hour, are eligible to receive pro-rated holiday pay, paid sick leave, and a regional transit pass. This internship is offered as a one-year position, working approximately 20 to 25 hours per week. The work is primarily performed during normal business hours and, from time to time, may involve evenings and weekends; a specific schedule will be worked out between the intern and manager. This position will be based at the downtown SANDAG office and also will involve shifts at the Caltrans District 11 office in Old Town.
