Job Description:

BASIC FUNCTION

The professional advisor will be responsible for closely collaborating with faculty academic advisors and student affairs staff to provide student-centered undergraduate advising for first year students. The advisor reports to the Dean of Undergraduate Studies and is responsible for the integration, facilitation and coordination of outcomes driven efforts in academic advising that support student success (e.g., retention, persistence, accomplishment, and graduation). These objectives are achieved through student-centered, holistic approaches designed to foster student success.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Advising

Advise students individually and/or with groups regarding academic core and/or departmental requirements, appropriate class selection, academic policies and procedures, and campus resources.

Assist students with identification of long-term goals, possible majors, and career plans. Work to position students to meet requirements for graduation within appropriate periods of time while preparing them to meet future goals.

Coordinate advising programs for special populations of students within scope of responsibility, such as new or transfer students, undeclared majors, etc.

Work with offices such as Career Development, Academic Center for Excellence, Health Services, Athletics, Student Activities and Academic Departments to facilitate programs that meet the needs and developmental trajectory of the students.

Work with the Office of the Registrar to coordinate registration of first year students at summer orientations and coordinate faculty advisor sessions at each session.

Student Success

Serve as a member of the student success committee and work collaboratively with the members of the committee to collect and capture benchmark data to inform retention and student engagement; act as a liaison and resource for both faculty and students.

Oversee the facilitation, implementation and analysis of the early progress reports for first year students and any other pertinent retention data captured through advising.

Serve as a point-person in each academic major to work with at-risk students by guiding a success plan.

Assist at-risk students with course selection to support student success goals.

Share data on retention and the work of the student success committee with the faculty assembly; engage in outreach with academic departments to present data on retention trends.

Together with student affairs staff, carry a case load of at-risk students and hold weekly meetings to track progress and guide students to academic resources.

Oversee the academic dismissal process (student notifications, follow-up) and engage in outreach to dismissed students.

Strategic and Planning

Plan and facilitate training sessions for specific groups including new faculty and faculty academic advisors on academic advising and advising in the core curriculum.

Use collected academic advising assessment and benchmark data to inform student and institutional success and improvement.

Coordinate efforts to continuously provide a high-quality and student-centered academic advising experience for students and ensure the professional development of faculty academic advisors in advising.

Develop and organize easily accessible academic advising resources for all faculty, staff, and students.

Update faculty and student advising syllabus as necessary and facilitate meaningful methods of assessment of academic advising.

Write and provide an annual end-of-the year report on academic advising.

Requirements:

Earned Master's degree in Higher education or related field.

Demonstrated expertise with academic advising in higher education.

Knowledge of first year student issues and advising techniques to support persistence to graduation.

Commitment to NACADA's Core Values of Academic Advising.

Demonstrated ability to work with electronic student records.

Knowledge and respect for faculty governance principles.
