Job Description


The Government Relations intern will support the Salt Lake County Mayor's Office relations between federal, state, and local jurisdictions. The candidate will have an opportunity to learn skills from the different positions that are held within the Mayor's Office. A mentor will be assigned to guide and assist the intern's development and growth.

This is a paid internship; the intern will receive $7.25/hour and can work up to 205 hours during the term. Work is primarily Monday through Friday with flexible hours to accommodate a school schedule. There may be occasional work on the weekends.


Candidates who study in a related field and are self-motivated will be considered.

Students with a focus on Public Policy, Political Science, Humanities, Social Behavioral Sciences, Law, Business, International Studies, or Communications are preferred; but all applicants are welcome. Preferred candidates will have completed junior level status in a bachelor's degree program, OR be enrolled in a graduate degree program.

Excellent writing and communication skills. Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Web and technical communications experience a plus.

* Assists with special projects and legislative outreach.
* Conducts studies in conjunction with a project, analyzes data, and makes recommendations.
* Prepares project reports, progress summaries, statistical analysis, and related data.
* Analyzes, generates, and maintains records and other reference material necessary for agency use.
* Composes reports, general letters, spreadsheets, e-mail, and memoranda from rough drafts or general instructions.
* Prepares reports analyzing specific aspects of department structures, functions, and/or operational procedures.
* Participates in the Internship Leadership events, which are most often luncheons with leaders from within the County. The purposes are to help interns build leadership skills and to provide networking opportunities.
