About Salt Lake City Corporation

For the last four years, we have committed to ensuring that the youth of Salt Lake City have the opportunities they need to succeed. We are asserting, in ways only City government can, the type of leadership needed to give our young people the priority and resources they deserve. Over the last year, we made marked progress toward our goal of creating programs to fill the gaps in services to our City's youth. We worked hard to bring nearly $1 million more in federal funds to our community, through appropriations requests that only the city is in a position to make. We have collaborated with dozens of partners to make sure that we are all working toward a common goal, without duplicating services. We launched new programs in cooperation with Glendale Middle and West High Schools , working closely with school faculty and the district office. We also launched a new summer program at Liberty Park and expanded course offerings and hours in existing programs. We started creative new collaborations, like working with the Salt Lake City Bicycle Cooperative to help more than two dozen young people fix and take home bikes for their personal use. In all, our programs served 4000 young people, not including the more than 20,000 who participated in our Imagination Celebration events. In the year to come, we will continue our ambitious efforts to ensure that every young person has the opportunity to participate in high-quality, enriching, safe, after-school and summer programs. We will do this collaboratively and effectively, bringing to bear the tools, leadership, and resources that City government is uniquely suited to provide. Our endeavor is a long-term commitment. While we can see many benefits in the short term, like decreased drug use, teen sexual activity, and adolescent crime, many of the most important results may not be seen for many years. It is time for our City to unite behind the common value of a better future for our youth. Together, with innovation and dedication, we can continue to make investments that will reap massive returns, for thousands of individuals, for families, and for our community as a whole.
