Lead Systems Engineer (Job Number:427108)


SAIC has openings for qualified candidates to work on an exciting project in the Charleston South Carolina office. The selected candidate will lead a team of engineering professionals performing system and software engineering in the design, development and delivery of an electronic system and capability for a special customer. A proven background in mission critical systems including mission planning, mission execution and mission analysis is required to lead this team. Experience in weapon systems development and deployment is a big plus; solid working knowledge and understanding of computer/network security is required. The Lead Engineer will be responsible for the design, development and delivery of a major system in a system-of-systems solution.


Leading the engineering team performing system, software and signal analysis, design, development and fielding a system to satisfy the customer's needs. This will entail the vision, guidance and leadership skills necessary to conceive the initial design, develop system requirements, perform requirements analysis, system engineering, software engineering, development of software systems utilizing modern programming languages. A strong system and software development knowledge in a secure environment is a must along with a good working knowledge of black box or modular engineering methodologies that includes.

This is a significant position in a high profile and technically challenging program for which you would be responsible for the design, development and delivery a viable solution to the customer. As a leader working in a team environment as well as individually, the successful candidate will be responsible for the proper analysis, development, evolution, implementation, and documentation of the entire enterprise and the overall system analysis, development and specification by working with other team members to ensure completeness and robustness of the entire system.

Specific duties include:

- Provide technical and team leadership to systematically design, develop, prototype, test and deploy a major system and capability to an important customer.

- Work with the Chief Engineer to ensure proper integration of system and capability to achieve desired effects.

- Deliver, on time and on budget, a fully integrated system and software capability to achieve the designed functional capabilities.

- Design, development, testing and fielding of a viable system

- Working with Chief Engineer and customer to develop system design(s)

- Develop, staff and lead engineering and software development teams for program execution

- Develop methodologies and metrics to ensure proper system development and schedule

- Develop automated processes to ensure excellence in design and development of system

- Systematically research, analyze, engineer, design and document system architecture and designs

- Develop engineering visions, strategies, plans, processes and procedures to ensure proper system development, security, fielding and execution

- Provide thought leadership and day-to-day engineering leadership to development team

- Integrate as a modular component of the larger system-of-systems.

- Deliver a complete integrated, modular end-to-end software and hardware system to customer

- Develop requirements and specifications for hardware and software.

Necessary Skills:

- The Lead Engineer applicants will need demonstrated strong knowledge and experience in design and development of mission critical systems in a multi-level security enclave.

- A solid working knowledge and understanding of computer/network security is required.

- Experience in large system-of-systems design

- Proficient in system engineering design process (IEEE12207)

- Experience in system development, test and fielding in a secure military environment

- Ability to develop mission critical digital system designs in a team environment

- Proven system engineering skills, with demonstrated Broad base of systems engineering

- Proven leadership skills

- Demonstrated successful project development and delivery history

- Working knowledge of modern software development and lifecycle models

- Successful history of design and development of mission critical systems

- Experienced designing, developing, modifying and improving software and associated software systems, primarily using C/C++/C#, JAVA, .NET technologies

- Experienced in developing functionally viable mission critical human-computer interfaces (HCI)

- Skilled in the design and implementation of databases, web portals, collaboration tools and resources

- Working knowledge of DISA ASD STIG and/or development practices for secure software.

- Ability to develop software engineering environments and capabilities tailored to efficiently execute system design, development and fielding


- Required: Minimum of 5 years applied work experience in design, development and engineering of Mission Critical or Weapon systems

- Preferred: 10 years of experience in military tactical or strategic systems

Education & Experience:

- Required: Bachelor's degree in systems engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics or a related field with 8 years of related experience

- Preferred: Master of Science or higher degree in engineering, Computer Science or related field with 10 or more years of experience.

Special: {Minimum requirements}

- Must be United States citizen

- Must possess a current DoD TS/SCI Clearance

- Must possess an SSBI that is current within the last 5 years

- Must able to pass a CI polygraph examination
