Duties Overview/Position Description: The Chief Nurse is a member of the VA Northern California Healthcare System (NCHCS) Nursing Leadership Team. The Chief Nurse reports to the Associate Director of Patient Care Services (ADPCS). The Chief Nurse has the clinical and operational oversight responsibility for the provision of timely and continuous high quality and safe nursing care delivered to patients throughout the VA NCHCS that is a geographical area of 40,000 square miles in 17 counties which includes: Sacramento Medical Center, Community Living Center in Martinez, 11 Community Based Outpatient Clinics, Joint Ventures at Travis Air Force Base and Behavioral Health. He/she is accountable for providing primary assistance to the Associate Director of Patient Care Services in areas of Surgical Services and assists in administrative support over Sterilization Processing. He/she works collaboratively with the Clinical Service Chiefs, Administrative Service Chiefs, and Nursing Leadership to achieve VA NCHCS', VISN 21's, and VHA's strategic goals and initiatives. The major responsibility of the Chief Nurse is to ensure the development of a highly educated, innovative and motivated nursing and technical staff that delivers high quality competent nursing care in all areas of responsibility throughout VA NCHCS. Qualifications: The Chief Nurse for Surgical Services and Sterilization Processing will have a Master's degree in Nursing or master's degree in a related field with a baccalaureate degree (BSN) in nursing from a National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and has met licensure requirements for practice in accordance with VA Handbook 5005/14, dated September 27, 2005. In addition, approximately five (5) years of successful nursing practice in progressively more responsible leadership assignments is required. OR Doctoral degree in nursing or a related field (regionally accredited university or college) and approximately three (3) years of successful nursing practice in progressively more responsible leadership assignments. Certification by the American Nurse Credentialing Center in Nursing Administration Advanced is preferred Travel Required Not Required Relocation Authorized No Job Requirements Job Requirements Key Requirements Must pass pre-employment examination.
