BASIC FUNCTION:
Perform a variety of skilled irrigation work in the installation, maintenance, repair, and modification of irrigation
systems for landscaped grounds; assist journey-level plumbers in work activities.


REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown
below [E]. This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or
abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principle job elements.)
Identify and repair asbestos cement (AC) pipe according to health and safety regulations, keep wet while working to prevent fiber from becoming airborne, and dispose of in a sealed plastic container. 
Install, repair, and replace landscape irrigation systems according to record drawings, sketches, or verbal
instructions.
Install, adjust, maintain, set, and reset electrical and mechanical control mechanisms for automatic operation;
identify variances in control boxes, and notify appropriate personnel; adjust watering schedule for special events, leagues, and school functions. 
Draw and revise blueprints to show locations of such things as piping, valves, sprinkler heads, controls, and other important details of the system; layout and design new irrigation systems. 
Identify and repair areas of broken water mains and piping, valves, fittings, nipples, or heads.
Dig trenches with shovel, or by use of a ditching machine.
Operate sophisticated electronic underground locating devices to trace underground pipelines, controller wires, and locating valves. 
Remove and replace broken sprinkler heads, parts, valves, and related components.
Make connections to valved water main using hand tools. 
Install relay switches, flow switches, pumps, and fuses; troubleshoot electrical problems related to electronic
controllers. 
Prepare a list of materials for ordering parts and supplies used in irrigation systems according to established
procedures. 
Operate and maintain a variety of specialized tools and equipment such as backhoe, trencher, power pump, power drill, pipe wrenches, and channel locks; drive a vehicle to conduct work; lift and carry heavy objects. 
Remain current and knowledgeable of new methods and advances in the field.
Work with school improvement initiatives that close student achievement gaps between racial, ethnic, and
economic groups by working with all of the diverse communities
Perform related duties as assigned.


TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by formal training in the installation, repair, or maintenance of irrigation and control systems, and four years experience in the installation, modification, maintenance, or repair of irrigation systems.


LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Hold a valid California Class C driver's license, and provide proof of insurance; employee entrance evaluation
(lifting test). Certification and/or training in asbestos removal and repair.


KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:


KNOWLEDGE OF:
Methods and techniques used in installation and maintenance of landscape irrigation systems.
Irrigation system control devices.
Electronic underground locating devices.
Uses and purposes of general tools and equipment required for installation and maintenance of landscape irrigation systems.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Building codes, policies, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to typical school.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Safe working methods and procedures in the presence of children.
Basic mathematics.
Technical aspects of field of specialty.
Health and safety regulations.

WORKING CONDITIONS:


SAMPLE ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor and outdoor environment, drive a vehicle to conduct work; subject to adverse seasonal weather conditions of heat and cold.

SAMPLE PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Push, pull, lift, and carry heavy objects; bend at the waist or stoop; stand, or crouch for extended periods of time; see to read drawings and sketches; dig; climb; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate specialized tools and equipment; hear and speak to exchange information.


SAMPLE HAZARDS:
Work around fumes, odors, vibration, noise, dust, and potentially dangerous machinery and chemicals; exposure to pipe solvents and petroleum based cements or glues, rust inhibitors, use of spray paints, and asbestos cement; subject to insect stings; working around and with machinery having moving parts.
