OVERVIEW:

What Is Practice Development at Ropes & Gray? Practice Development plays an essential role in Ropes & Gray's business strategy. Our Practice Development professionals, working in teams, are embedded within each of the firm's practice groups and offices around the world. Each team stands in a unique position, working closely with the partners in the relevant practice group or office to design and implement a variety of business initiatives to help the practice group or office achieve its strategic priorities. Each Practice Development team also manages the core business functions of each practice group or office, including in the areas of strategic planning, marketing, business development, lateral partner integration, knowledge management and practice group administration. Our Practice Development professionals serve as trusted advisers for the partners in the practice group or office and as liaisons on behalf of their practice group or office with many other staff departments at the firm.

They are given attorney-facing responsibilities and opportunities to be involved in a wide range of business activities within their practice group or office, as well as in firm-wide, cross-practice group and cross-office initiatives.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Practice Development Specialist ("PDS") will support all aspects of the management of the Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group. This includes providing support on marketing, business development, knowledge management, lateral attorney hiring and integration, and other business and logistical support critical to its day-to-day operations and long-term growth. The PDS will contribute to the overall success of the practice group by helping to implement practice group strategy and the overall firm strategy. In addition, the PDS will support strategic efforts in industries in which the attorney practice. The PDS will also coordinate attorneys, professional staff and various business line groups on a variety of cross-office, cross-practice, industry, or firm strategic initiatives and will act as a liaison to other firm departments relating to the practice groups' support needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Work with the Practice Development Manager ("PDM"), Practice Group Leader ("PGL"), attorneys and other internal firm resources to develop and implement practice group strategic plans and individual partner business plans. This includes business development and marketing initiatives within the practice group and across adjacent practice groups and industry teams.


* Create and manage processes, tools and resources to support the effective collection of practice group data, including client lists, experience lists, intranet site(s), and efficient day-to-day administration of the practice group.


* Facilitate and coordinate marketing and business development initiatives, including pitches, responses to RFPs, client presentations and webinars, and organization and planning of client events, industry conferences and sponsorships.


* Work closely with the Marketing Department to facilitate the practice group's marketing efforts, including the preparation of marketing collateral (e.g., brochures, bios, ads, website and practice overviews).


* Assist with the analysis of practice group financial reports, metrics and key performance indicators.


* Work closely with the firm's Events, Creative and PR teams to help identify, assess and coordinate industry visibility and externally focused activities, including: sponsorships, speaking engagements and conference attendance; charitable donations; and webinars and client events.


* Work with the PDM and PGL to plan and execute practice group and partner meetings, as well as internal practice group social and team-building events.


* Coordinate and prepare legal ranking submissions and league tables, including working with the PDM and PGL to determine the rankings strategy for each submission, drafting and finalizing submissions and tracking submission information from year to year (as applicable).


* Assist the PDM, PGL and partners in conducting research and gathering and analyzing practice group, industry, competitive and client-specific data to inform and support business development and marketing initiatives.


* Assist the PDM and PGL with the onboarding and integration of lateral partners and counsel into the practice groups, including helping to draft sponsor memoranda, prepare and execute integration plans and track progress of same.


* Assist the PDM in supervising and developing the team's Practice Development Assistants.



ESSENTIAL CAPABILITIES

* Working knowledge of law firm and practice operations.

* Ability to establish credibility with Ropes & Gray partners and to display the right mix of confidence, tact and persistence in working with the firm's lawyers.


* Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality of the Firm's internal and personnel affairs.


* Ability to work with professional staff in a multi-office environment.


* Occasional travel to attend group-sponsored client events and/or seminars.



EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

* An undergraduate degree, plus a minimum of three years of relevant experience in a large law firm or corporate environment.


* A background in business or equivalent experience is desirable.
