The Reliability & System Safety Engineering Department is seeking a Software Safety Engineer I. Reliability & System Safety Engineering ensures our systems safely and reliably perform their required mission functions through their required environments while meeting overall cost constraints. This position will be supporting programs specifically by insuring product safety in relation to software, firmware, and test equipment.

What is the impact on the product of a failure?  What is the likelihood a given failure will occur?  Given the architecture, what are the safety critical software functions?  These are the questions System Safety and Software Safety Engineers answer every day.  Entry level engineers will work under the direction of senior System Safety engineers and their engineering leadership on System Safety engineering tasks and analyses, production support tasks and failure reporting and corrective action resolution tasks as members of the System Safety Engineering Department. 

So what does a System Safety Engineer do?  System Safety Engineers document all analyses, test results and procedures for reference by both program and customer personnel.  The System Safety Engineer participates in all design reviews and customer meetings.  The System Safety Engineer typically functions as a systems-oriented engineer, with a broad view of the project starting from the conceptual level through the product's final form. The System Safety Engineer requires a high degree of self-motivation and ability to effectively interface with co-workers. 


This position may be a Salary Grade E01 Systems Engineer I or Salary Grade E02 Systems Engineer II based on the candidate's qualifications as they relate to the skills, experience and education requirements for the position.


Required Skills:

Ability to take an analytical approach and utilize technical knowledge to solve challenges with optimal solutions

Experience with interfacing between multiple disciplines to gain full understanding of the architecture and design.

Experience with software requirements development, management and architecture.

Experience with requirements verification and validation.

Must have a good understanding and knowledge of the technical theories, and concepts in the software field.

Required Education (including Major):

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Engineering or Physics with a minimum GPA of 3.0 from an ABET accredited program

The Job Title for a Bachelor of Science degree is a Software Safety Engineer I. 
The Job Title for a Master of Science degree is a Software Safety Engineer II.


This position requires the eligibility to obtain a security clearance.  Non-US citizens may not be eligible to obtain a security clearance.  The Defense Industrial Security Clearance Office (DISCO), an agency of the Department of Defense, handles and adjudicates the security clearance process.  Security clearance factors include, but are not limited to, allegiance to the US, foreign influence, foreign preference, criminal conduct, security violations and drug involvement.  Employment is contingent on other factors, including, but not limited to, background checks and drug screens.
