Job Description

The North Warning System (NWS) is a joint United States and Canadian radar system that includes 47 radar sites spanning the Arctic from Labrador to the Alaska border. The NWS provides the capability to detect airborne threats across North America's polar region, providing a command and control capability to the Canadian Air Defence Sector (CADS) of the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD).

Raytheon provides Operations and Maintenance (O&M) of the NWS system including full care, custody, and control of the entire NWS and its components. This includes 47 radar sites; five logistics support sites (LSSs), a monitoring and control center, and a radar depot. Key activities include radar, equipment and facilities maintenance/repair; logistics support; and remote monitoring and control.


Job Description:

Raytheon seeks an intermediate Mechanical Engineer to support the NWS system O&M contract in the program\u2019s Ottawa office. Reporting to the Facility Engineering Supervisor, selected candidate would be responsible for mechanical engineering designs that arise from defective, regulatory compliance, or equipment obsolescence.


Responsibilities:

Perform technical investigation, analysis, and design of systems including:
- Fuel Storage and Distribution,
- Potable and Waste Water Storage, Distribution, and Treatment,
- Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning,
- Structures,
- Corrosion Protection Systems,
- Power Generation Systems, and
- Fire Suppression Systems.

  • Preparation of specifications, plans, drawings, Engineering Change Requests, Supplier Statements of Work, bid packages, and costing for a variety of projects.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance by auditing existing equipment and systems against current legislation, review and assess any impact as a result of proposed legislation, including timing considerations.
  • Prepare plans to accommodate regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure the currency of all technical documentation, including drawings.
  • Conduct analysis on failed equipment and systems.
  • Identify root causes and implement preventive actions.
  • Prepare standard operating procedures and technical service bulletins.
  • Establish training standards and requirements for technicians operating and/or maintaining equipment.
  • Identify reliable sources of spares to ensure the term serviceability of installed equipment and systems.
  • Occasional travel to remote areas of Canada\u2019s Arctic to perform on-site investigations, as required.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of four years related experience.
  • Possess a Professional Engineering License (P.Eng.).
  • A working knowledge of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, API codes and standards, the National Masters Specification, and the Canadian National Building Code.
  • Proficiency with MS Word and Excel; self- motivated and highly organized to keep track of multiple projects; possess strong analytical, communication and report writing skills as well as professional and friendly demeanor.
  • Adaptability and ability to manage multiple priorities and work cross-culturally within the Canadian Arctic.
  • Excellent oral/written communications with the ability to present and explain technical information to both engineers and non-technical staff.

Desired Skills/ Knowledge:

  • Previous experience with structures and construction in an Arctic environment is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of relevant building codes, bulk fuel storage tank and distribution system regulations. Working knowledge of fire system codes is an asset.
  • Experience working with staff in geographically dispersed work locations.
  • Strong ability to set and manage customer expectations.
  • Familiarity with projects involving Military Standards or the Canadian Department of National Defense (DND) as the Customer.
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity and an understanding of work in the Canadian Arctic.\u200b
