Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to support multiple space programs in El Segundo, CA. The selected candidate will conduct structural analysis for space flight missions and is expected to work with a team of specialized junior and senior structural engineers to evaluate EO/IR hardware designs for static and dynamic environments for strength, fatigue, stiffness, thermoelastic behavior, and other system and sub-system level performance metrics such as Line of Sight. The selected candidate will be expected to define the scope and level of analysis required to meet required objectives and will be held accountable for completing the work within the agreed upon cost and schedule. The candidate will be expected to present his or her work for peer reviews and external customer reviews. The selected candidate will work with the customer and engineering leadership to define testing required to validate structural analyses and to verify compliance with requirements. In addition, the selected candidate will be expected to plan and support tests, perform data reduction and engage in structural model correlation.

Required Skills:

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience performing structural analysis for space structures
  • Strong knowledge in the use of commercial Finite Element Analysis codes and modelers, preferably NASTRAN/PATRAN
  • Knowledge in performing the following types of analyses: Modal, random vibration, fatigue, thermoelastic and inertial loading
  • Expertise with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will need a U.S. Security Clearance within 1 year of start date.
  • U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will require the ability to access US only data systems.
  • Ability to obtain a DoD Security Clearance

Desired Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to convey highly technical material in a clear and concise format to a general audience
  • Ability to solve problems by applying, scientific principles, theories and concepts
  • Ability to work with minimal oversight
  • Knowledge of commercial CAD software, such as Pro/E, Solidworks, or Unigraphics and design experience
  • Knowledge of computer programming and use of Matlab software
  • Ability to read detailed engineering drawings and specifications, including understanding of GD&T
  • Vibration test experience
  • Optical or thermal analysis background
  • Ability to obtain and SSBI and DoD Top Secret clearance

Required Education:
BS in Mechanical Engineering or related field from accredited university.

Desired Education:
MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field from accredited university.

This position requires a U.S. person or the ability to obtain an Export Authorization from the appropriate government agency for non-U.S. persons
