The Secure Sensor Solutions RF Mechanical Design Department is currently seeking a Multi-Discipline Engineer for the S3 GPS & Navigation Systems organization in El Segundo, CA to reshape the paradigm of high cost associated defense product with innovative, low cost alternatives. The GPS & Navigation Systems organization has developed solutions in GPS, GPS contested and GPS denied environments for over 20 customers and platforms and is about to release the next phase of products with the modernization of GPS satellites and the advent of M-Code.

The Multi-Discipline Engineer primary job responsibilities include GPS and navigation system product architecture for high volume, low cost defense applications. The position will include team leadership of a cross-functional team of hardware engineers, while simultaneously developing innovative solutions to customer needs for products surviving extreme dynamic shock and thermal environments. This position will include oversight of product engineering from conceptual hardware design to detailed mechanical and electrical design, manufacturing and qualification. The Multi-Discipline Engineer will be directly applying engineering expertise and working with cross-functional teams to define product architecture solutions for GPS sensors (hand held devices) and navigation systems meeting the highest customer expectations. Electronic designs may include high density electronic packaging designs and electronic components / devices such as ASICs and FPGAs, design of electronic packaging chassis and structures, interconnects, thermal control design of high density electronic systems and electronic enclosures, adhering to design constraints such as size, weight, power, and design to cost. Candidate will be expected to follow established procedures in creation of technical data package work products, while working closely with program management and functional supervision to ensure the overall design objectives are met. Responsibility for the Quality, Timeliness, Completeness and Efficiency (QTCE) of these work products and monitoring/improving QTCE through metrics and process improvements is also required. Contacts are primarily with program management, customer, members of engineering team, immediate section manager, project leaders and other personnel (peers) within the applicable program.

The Multi-Disciplined Engineer shall be a highly motivated “self-starter” able to lead by example, possessing a strong hardware architecture development background in both mechanical and electrical design with the ability to drive research and development teams with innovative solutions to challenging design criteria. This position requires strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills to maintain positive relationships & satisfaction with Programs leadership (Engineering and Program Management). Experience designing high volume, low cost products from beginning to end and dealing with contract manufacturers on quick turn schedules is highly desired. Familiarity with leading PCB technology and electrical design and characterization is highly desired. Both board layout and mechanical design desired. Experience with system requirements development is desired. Experience with capture and proposals is a plus.

Required Skills:
  • Minimum 10 years professional experience in mechanical design of complex systems
  • Design experience with handheld GPS devices
  • Ability to define product architecture for handheld devices
  • Strong background in mechanical and electrical engineering design
  • Ability to drive research and development teams
  • Strong background in development, documentation, fabrication, assembly and test/delivery of military electronic products
  • Broad based hardware engineering background.
  • Experience in commercial handheld electronic device design and manufacturing
  • Knowledge of design and fabrication methodologies for printed wiring boards, thermal heat exchangers, machined components, and RF subassemblies
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment, including as a leader of small teams. Shall be able to work to a budget and schedule and provide status.

  • Experience with program cost and schedule monitoring and reporting
  • U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will require the ability to access US only data systems.
  • U.S Citizenship is required as the position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. DOD security clearance within 1 year of start date.

Desired Skills:
  • 15+ years’ experience in Project Management or other Lead role on Large Development jobs
  • Experience with munitions environmental requirements and design constraints
  • Experience as an IPT or CPT Lead
  • EVMS Certified and professional exposure to EVMS or similar budget tracking system
  • Proficiency with CREO/Pro-Engineer CAD modeling and analysis tools.
  • Experience in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance analysis for drawings.
  • Possess an active security clearance

Required Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Discipline with equivalent experience

Desired Education: Master's Degree
