Job Description

Raytheon Intelligence, Information and Services (IIS) is seeking a Automation Software Engineer to join our team in support of the Air Operations Center Weapons System (AOC WS) Long Term Modernization and Sustainment Program (LTM&S). The Automation Software Engineer position is located in Hampton, Virginia, at the USAF customer site, and reports to the Automation Team Lead.

This position requires automation engineering experience, with a demonstrated understanding and application of automation principals and processes, experience in automation engineering and proven innovation in determining potential improvements gained by automated applications and testing. The successful candidate must be able to work in a team environment with a focus on innovating automated processes into current processes.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Actively participate on a team of about 7-10 engineers to introduce and successfully apply automation to the Air Operations Center (AOC) functional and performance testing activities and automated installation, configuration, and deployment activities. (The AOC weapon system is a system-of-systems with over 35 major applications.)
  • Develop automated installation, configuration, and deployment scripts using multiple automation tools such as Red Hat Ansible and PowerShell.
  • Implement an automation approach that includes modularity, reusability, configurability, sustainability, and quality.
  • Develop automation scripts which adhere to quality and coding standards.
  • Create and review new automation artifacts such as automated installation artifacts.
  • Ensure configuration management and data management processes are followed for all automation scripts.
  • Foster a collaborative working relationship with contacts in the independent test community and development program offices.
  • Support the operations and sustainment of lab resources.

Required Qualifications & Skills:
Current SECRET Clearance.
Security Plus+

Software engineering background including:
  • Software design principles and software coding best practices.
  • Experience using automation tools, preferably Red Hat Ansible and PowerShell.
  • Experience working in an Agile Scrum environment.
  • YAML and/or PowerShell skills and experience.

Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Ability to produce detailed technical documentation.

Ability to work on a team under pressure to meet strict schedule requirements.

Additional Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
Experience automating installations and configurations on multiple operating system such as Windows, Unix, and Solaris.

Experience with multiple automation tools, such as:
  • Chef, Puppet, and/or Ansible
  • PowerShell and their associated languages (Ruby, Puppet, YAML, PowerShell, etc.)

Experience with DevOps methods and associated toolchains, including Paired Programming,
Continuous Integration, and Continuous Delivery

Bachelor’s degree with a minimum six (6) years of functional area experience;


Master’s degree with a minimum four (4) years of functional area experience;


PhD with a minimum two (2) years of functional area experience


14 years relevant experience in lieu of a degree
