Job Description

Whole Life Engineering Directorate is comprised of several disciplines whose main objective is to influence hardware and systems early in their life cycle to assure effective operation, reliability, maintainability and safe and economical ownership by the customer and end user. The Seapower Capability Systems Networks Whole Life Engineering section provides a wide set of product support engineering capabilities to the Whole Life Engineering and Support department. Our objective is to oversee all front-end design responsibilities as well as sustainment products and services for our products and for the warfighter.

As a Sr. Systems Safety Engineer, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to multi-disciplinary agile teams responsible for system and software safety, hazard management and environmental compliance for major development and sustainment programs. In addition you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to multi-disciplinary agile teams, as a system safety technical expert responsible for system and software safety, hazard management, and environmental compliance for major development and sustainment programs on the Cooperative Engagement Capability Mission Systems portfolio in St. Petersburg, FL.


This position supports the U.S. Navy’s Cooperative Engagement Capability, a real-time ‘sensor-netting’ system that brings together radar data into a single integrated air picture from geographically dispersed ships, aircraft and ground-based units. This integrated picture improves a battlegroup’s effectiveness by enabling longer range, cooperative, or layered engagements. Today’s Cooperative Engagement Capability benefits from advancements in commercial and specialized technologies, as well as from the experience and expertise of the Raytheon team, continually innovating to advance capability and performance.

This position requires a DoD Active Secret security clearance.

This position can be a G08 or G09 based on the candidate’s qualifications as they relate to the skills, experience and responsibility requirements for the position.

Required Skills:

  • 4+ years’ experience in Engineering
  • Experience with hazard or risk analysis
  • Existing Secret clearance
Desired Skills:
  • Experience with environmental, and occupational safety and health, compliance standards and regulations ideally applicable to military weapon systems.
  • Top Secret clearance a plus.
  • Experience with and knowledge of military system safety standards, including MIL-STD-882.
  • Experience with the U.S. Navy Weapon System Explosive Safety Review Board (WSESRB) and System Software Safety Technical Review Panel (SSSTRP).
  • Experience with safety aspects of human systems integration standards (MIL-STD-1472) and design guidelines for electronic equipment (MIL-HDBK-454).
  • Effective writing, public speaking and presentation skills
  • Exposure to software safety standards, such as STANAG 4404 and the Joint Services Software Safety Committee Software System Safety Handbook
  • Experience with Nationally Recognized Test Laboratory (NRTL) testing and certification requirements
  • Experience in Hazard Tracking databases, and hazardous materials identification and management
  • Experience with Dynamic Object Oriented Requirements [management] System (DOORS)
  • Experience with commercial and military standards pertaining to the prevention of Electromagnetic Radiation Hazards.
  • Willingness and ability for limited travel, including local between Raytheon facilities
Required Education:
  • A BS Degree in a STEM discipline
