Job Description

Raytheon is seeking a Linux System Administratorto join our team in operating and maintaining the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Common Ground System (CGS), a state-of-the-art ground station for the next generation of low earth orbiting environmental satellites. This system provides global coverage, monitor environmental conditions, collect, disseminate and process data about the Earth's weather, atmosphere, oceans, land and near-space environment.

The System Administrator is responsible for administration and operational security activities for the ground system - including execution of recurring security maintenance and compliance functions across a widely dispersed ground system. They will establish functional and technical specifications, solves hardware/software interface problems, defines input/output parameters, and ensures integration of the entire system or subsystem. The administrator will also be key member of the team that transfers this system into the AWS cloud. They will report to the IDPS Infrastructure Lead Engineer.

Duties can include, but not limited to:
  • Linux Systems Administration
  • Password updates
  • Execution of recurring security maintenance and compliance functions across a widely dispersed ground system
  • Patch and Vulnerability evaluation, remediation, and work-off/closure of security findings
  • Following established SA processes and procedures
  • Reviewing and impact assessment of Engineering Change Requests (ECR)
  • Perform other tasks assigned by Infrastructure Lead.

Qualified applicants must be a U.S. Citizen, will be subject to a security investigation, must be able to obtain a DOD Common Access Card (CAC) and pass a national agency check.

Required Skills:
  • 1+ years of experience with Linux systems administration.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a process driven environment
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationship with all levels of an organization, including customers, engineering organizations, IPT members, supporting functional organizations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to quickly come up to speed on technical efforts.
  • Ability to be on-call and carry on-call cellphone during non-working hours. Ability to work off-hour shifts and weekend shifts as needed to support high impact operations.
Desired Skills:
  • Experience with Red Hat Linux
  • Experience with use of security operations software compliance tools.
  • Hardware/software trouble shooting skills
  • Experience with security operations: system protection, system scanning and auditing, recurring security configuration checks and management, risk assessments, contingency/incident response, and security sustainment of a large ground system.
  • Experience in action item management, requirement change management and overall development and progress metrics.
  • Experience with VMWare
  • Experience with AWS
  • Experience with Chef
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor degree from an accredited institution and less than two (2) years of relevant experience
  • Eight (8) years of experience (for a total of eight (8) or more years) may be substituted for a degree, with a high school diploma
Required Education:
University Degree in STEM discipline and less than 2 years experience,


Minimum of eight years relevant experience will be considered in lieu of college degree.
Occasional travel in the Continental United States including JPSS sites in Suitland, Maryland and Fairmont WV

Normal work hours are between 8am and 5pm; however, various mission activities will require a flexible work schedule, sometimes off-hours, weekends and possibly holidays depending on mission needs.
