Job Description:
The Chemist / Materials Scientist is an entry-level position in the Materials Verification Laboratory. The ideal candidate will have experience in analytical chemistry and related chemistry disciplines and/or a materials engineering background.

The Materials Verification Laboratory at Raytheon is responsible for performing quality control testing and material certification review of a variety of materials used in the aerospace industry. This position will offer a qualified candidate the opportunity to perform hands-on testing of adhesives, polymers, tapes, composites, metals, and various other production materials. The primary responsibilities will include logging in incoming materials, utilizing the service request database, preparing samples for verification analyses according to established test instructions, physically testing samples for verification analyses according to established test instructions, certification review of accompanying documentation, and operating in the materials verification laboratory according to laboratory safety and laboratory compliance procedures. Tasks will require careful attention to detail on repetitive procedures. Collaboration with other engineers is required. Candidate must be able to manage and coordinate a wide variety of simultaneous tasks within set schedule requirements. This candidate will become part of a multi-disciplined team that responsible for the analysis of hundreds of production materials each month.
U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will need a U.S. Security Clearance within 1 year of start date.

Note: This position can be Salary Grade G06 (Multi-disciplined Engineer I) or Salary Grade G07 (Multi-disciplined Engineer II) based upon the applicant’s education.

Required Education, Skills and Experience:
· U.S. Citizenship is required
· BS Degree or MS Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science
· Academic experience applying critical thinking skills in materials problem solving, materials characterization, or production engineering and competence with the use and application of technical standards (e.g., MIL, ASTM, IPC, …), principles, theories, concepts and techniques
· Instrument familiarity including FTIR, UV-Vis, Spark-OES, Thermal Analysis (DSC, TMA, DMA, TGA), Rheology, GC/MS, GPC
· Chemical laboratory skills (solution making, sample preparation, etc.) as well as general working knowledge of laboratory equipment (ovens, thermometers, calipers, micrometers, and Vernier scales)
· General statistical skills
· Ability to collaborate with other engineers to summarize data in database or report format relaying test details to appropriate personnel in a timely and accurate manner
· Understanding of material testing concepts (hardness, adhesion tests, sample preparation procedures, etc.)
· Ability to perform established testing & data analysis with minimal direction, troubleshoot, document, and communicate findings to Lab Coordinator and team members
· Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
· Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) Secret Clearance

Desired Skills and Experience:
· Experience testing to ASTM specifications D1002, D2240, D3529, D3330, D3359
· Experience performing mechanical testing with MTS Load Frames
· Experience using PRISM, SAP, and/or other RMS product tracking tools
· Experience measuring viscosity with Brinkman viscometers
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills
· Detail-oriented and great organizational skills
Required Education:
BS Degree or MS Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or a related discipline from an accredited curriculum with a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher.

This position requires the eligibility to obtain a security clearance. Non-US citizens may not be eligible to obtain a security clearance. The Defense Industrial Security Clearance Office (DISCO), an agency of the Department of Defense, handles and adjudicates the security clearance process. Security clearance factors include, but are not limited to, allegiance to the US, foreign influence, foreign preference, criminal conduct, security violations and drug involvement.
