Job Description

This position requires a U.S. person or the ability to obtain an Export Authorization from the appropriate government agency for non-U.S. persons.

The Hardware Engineering Center (HWEC) is an engineering organization that focuses on product producibility and mission assurance. It is a vital link in the integrated product development process that allows Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems (SAS) to introduce reliable new products faster, better, and more economically.

This engineering fabrication shop Co-op position will provide an opportunity to turn basic machining knowledge into hands on CNC machining and programming experience producing close tolerance engineering prototype parts and assemblies for multiple programs. Experience will also be gained in making tight tolerance sheet metal parts and mechanical enclosures.

This is a Co-Op position and candidates will be expected to work a semester cycle, typically May – August or May/June – September.Future cycles would include September – December and January – April.

For Multi-Level Intern Requisitions:
This position can be a Salary Grade of G03, G04, G05 or NUG based on the candidate's qualifications as they relate to the skills, experience and responsibility requirements for the position.

  • G03 (College Sophomore by Fall 2018) - must have completed 30 hours of college
  • G04 (College Junior by Fall 2018) - must have completed 60 hours of college
  • G05 (College Senior by Fall 2018) - must have completed 90 hours of college

Required Skills:

  • Ability to work a school semester
  • Experience with programming and program debugging of CNC multi-axis milling machines
  • Able to understand and create mechanical parts and assemblies from sketches or detailed drawings utilizing specification requirements and a BOM in close collaboration with program engineers
  • Hands on experience and knowledge working with Pro-E and/or other CAD tools
  • Experience operating milling machines, lathes, drill presses, grinders, cut-off saws, and other shop tools.
  • Experience completing tight tolerance precision machining work with close guidance while meeting timing and cost constraints
  • Experienced using Microsoft office including Excel, Word and Project and related database tools
  • Experience using Micrometers, Calipers, Height Gage and Multi-axis measurement tools
  • U.S. Citizenship is a requirement
  • Ability to access U.S. only data systems

Desired Skills:

  • A minimum of 1-3 years of basic machine shop experience
  • Willing to work flexible hours and overtime when necessary to meet deadlines
  • Capable of working independently with minimal direction to produce simple hardware meeting the engineers requirements
  • Support Raytheon engineering meetings and special events throughout the year to boost networking and sphere of influence as available
  • Experience understanding Blueprints, Parts drawings, Sketches, Assembly Drawings, BOM’s and product specifications
  • Experience with making parts for electronic and mechanical assemblies
  • Willingness to learn and support a deadline driven machine shop environment
  • Able to work independently but know when to stop and ask the right questions,
  • Basic math and geometry problem solving skills
  • A self-starter
  • Multitasker, is willing to and can handle successfully supporting multiple projects simultaneously
  • Willing to learn the use of sheet metal equipment for making close tolerance enclosures including brakes, punches and shear.

Required Education:

  • Currently pursuing a BS / BA degree from an accredited four-year university and entering their Sophomore, Junior, or Senior year by Fall 2018. Must be working towards a degree in a Technical Engineering Program, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Computer Technology, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent technical discipline. Must be appropriate grade level listed above.
