Job Description

This position requires a U.S. person or the ability to obtain an Export Authorization from the appropriate government agency for non-U.S. persons.

The Hardware Engineering Center (HWEC) is an engineering organization that focuses on product producibility and mission assurance. It is a vital link in the integrated product development process that allows Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems (SAS) to introduce reliable new products faster, better, and more economically.

The candidate will work within Optics and Laser – Integrated Products department of the Hardware Engineering Center. Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Build test set-ups and use of optical tools such as interferometers, theodolites and spectrophotometers.
  • Align and test of opto-mechanical tactical sensors and laser systems.
  • Design and analyze optical sensors including ray tracing, stray light analysis, and tolerance analyses.
  • Work with suppliers to get optical components and systems that meet requirements.

The chosen candidate will learn and apply technical standards, principles, concepts and techniques. Candidates will be expected to provide recommendations to a variety of technical problems of appropriate scope and complexity, working under general supervision. Successful candidates should expect to be immersed in a fast-paced, team-based, and challenging technical environment where an individual with talent and initiative can stand out and thrive.

For Multi-Level Intern Requisitions:

  • This position can be a Salary Grade of G04, G05 or NUG based on the candidate's qualifications as they relate to the skills, experience and responsibility requirements for the position.
  • G04 (College Junior by Fall 2018) - must have completed 60 hours of college
  • G05 (College Senior by Fall 2018) - must have completed 90 hours of college
  • NUG (Post- Graduate-Masters-PhD by Fall 2018) - must have an undergraduate degree and currently enrolled or about to enroll in a graduate degree program

Required Skills:

  • Must have a good understanding of optics, lasers, electromagnetic propagation, and their interaction with materials.
  • Must have completed lab and/or analysis projects and be able to explain the concepts and outcomes.
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Ability to access to U.S. only data systems

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with optical design and analysis tools, such as Code V or Fred.
  • Experience with hands on assembly and alignment of optical tests or assemblies
  • Experience with optical measurement tools such as interferometers and spectrophotometers.
  • Experience working with lasers
  • Demonstrated leadership experience through school or extracurricular projects is a plus
  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA (Please upload an unofficial transcript when applying)

Required Education:

  • Currently pursuing a BS / BA degree from an accredited four-year university and entering as a college Junior or Senior OR pursuing a MS / MA / PhD by Fall 2018. Must be working towards a degree in Optical Engineering, Laser Physics, or equivalent technical discipline with emphasis in Optics or Lasers. Must be appropriate grade level listed above.
