Job Description

University Programs: Systems Engineer I (Bachelor’s Degree Level)

Raytheon is seeking a recent college graduate in Computer Engineering or Computer Science (other STEM degrees considered if sufficient computer systems experience can also be demonstrated) for our entry level Systems, Integration and Test (SEIT) Engineer position in our team maintaining the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Common Ground System (CGS), a state-of-the-art ground station for the next generation of low earth orbiting environmental satellites. This system provides global coverage, monitors environmental conditions, collects, disseminates and processes data about the Earth's weather, atmosphere, oceans, land and near-space environment. The JPSS Sustainment SEIT Engineer will perform engineering tasks ensuring CGS subsystems function together within dynamic systems maintenance cycles supporting an operational ground system.

The successful candidate for this position will possess an interest in space systems and become part of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers with backgrounds that include Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Math, and Computer Science. In addition to performing the primary systems integration and test role of the job, one must bring a quick-response mindset to support investigation of system anomalies in operations as they arise, along with determining the CGS system configuration changes and fixes necessary to resolve them. The CGS is a large, complex, and geographically distributed system. Team members depend on each others’ expertise in different subsystems, so fluid communication, cooperation and cohesion among all team members is a necessity for success. This position exists in a continuous-learning environment where everyone is expected to teach each other and have the confidence and interest to acquire knowledge that may be outside of one’s particular academic background.

SEIT Engineer responsibilities include:
  • Contribute as a member of the Integration and Test team responsible for the reliable and continuous system integration and maintenance of the CGS
  • Work closely with Mission Support and Operations Team members, providing continuous engineering support of the operational system, including support for CGS system configuration changes and anomaly resolution
  • Adhere to and participate in the definition of System Engineering, Integration and Test processes and procedures
  • Apply best practice standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques to resolve network and enterprise application problems
  • Ensure completion of assigned project/program milestones as directed by his/her immediate supervisor
  • Participate in technical and process reviews and resolve systems engineering and integration process issues
  • Participate in the development and review of Engineering Change Requests, to include participation in Change Management Boards, across multiple program levels
  • Participate in technical interchange meetings with team members and other program personnel, and represent the organization in matters pertaining to his/her functional area
  • Participate in risk and opportunity analysis, tracking and mitigation
  • Comply with all company safety requirements

Required Skills:
  • Demonstrated experience with Unix/Linux operating systems
  • Demonstrated experience with Unix/Linux shell scripting
  • Demonstrated experience with Windows Server operating systems
  • Familiarity with COTS server hardware and willingness to learn more specialized ground station hardware
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting analytical, and problem solving activities using structured problem solving techniques
  • Demonstrated experience establishing and maintaining working relationships with customers, users, and other peer groups
  • Demonstrated experience in working in dynamic environments requiring ability to assess and prioritize tasks, managing time and resources to meet assigned deadlines
  • Experience with the Microsoft Office tools
  • Possess very good written and oral communication skills
  • Availability to travel
  • US Citizenship status is required as this position will need a US Security Clearance within 1 year of start date.

Desired Skills:
  • Demonstrated experience with one or more of: Perl, Java, C++, Python, Ruby
  • Familiarity with NAS/SAN storage
  • Familiarity with Desktop/Server Virtualization
  • Familiarity with security engineering and/or network engineering
  • Familiarity with Windows batch and powershell scripting
  • Familiarity with systems engineering techniques and life-cycle management
  • Familiarity with structured analysis and design methodologies, object-oriented analysis and design methodologies
  • Demonstrated presentation skills
  • Familiarity with real-time satellite command, control and communications systems a plus

Required Education (Including Major):

Bachelors or Masters Degree in Computer Engineering and Computer Science from an accredited college obtained within the past 18 months. Other engineering and science majors such as Aerospace Eng, Systems Eng, Electrical Eng, Mechanical Eng, Physics, and Math will be considered if required skills can be demonstrated.
Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is desired
(Please include your transcript with your resume)

This position can be a Salary Grade G06 or Salary Grade G07 based on the candidate's qualifications as it relates to the educational requirement for the position.

This position requires the ability to obtain a government security clearance. Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Non-US citizens may not be eligible to obtain a security clearance. The Defense Industrial Security Clearance Office (DISCO), an agency of the Department of Defense, handles and adjudicates the security clearance process. Security clearance factors include, but are not limited to, allegiance to the US, foreign influence, foreign preference, criminal conduct, security violations and drug involvement. Employment is contingent on other factors, including, but not limited to, background checks and drug screens.
