Job Description

Rafter, Inc. is an education startup, focused on leveraging technology to reduce costs for students. We started out as BookRenter.com , the first textbook rental service for college students, and from that expertise expanded into logistics, pricing, and digital platforms offered directly to college campuses. From mobile checkout (think Square for bookstores) to robust inventory systems rivaling that of Shopify, we tackle new and interesting problems everyday, and the best part is we tackle them together as a team.
Rafter is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace and is an affirmative action employer.
Front End Developer
Are you a Front End Developer with a strong emphasis on HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript? Do you have both Design and Development experience and are you interested in approaching the technical challenges that come with revolutionizing a traditional industry such as higher education? Are you interested in a role where you will directly impact new products, help shape our engineering culture and develop the UX/UI that will lead campuses to offer more affordable course materials for students? If so, please read on.
Skills & Requirements
2+ yrs of experience with Front End / Web application development Aware of core UX principles, philosophies, and methodologies Development experience in Javascript/JQuery, Coffeescript Familiar with CSS and JS libraries (Foundation, Bootstrap, Backbone, React) Familiar with Git workflow Familiar with Ruby and Rails Enjoy problem solving, white-boarding, learning (and teaching) Experience with HAML, SCSS and AJAX Experience in Lean UX and Agile workflows is a plus
About Us
We're a startup that values work-life balance and a fun, flexible work environment. As big fans of Rework and 37 Signals (aka Basecamp), not only do we think you can have a successful startup without working 10-hour days, we believe that's the best way to achieve success (any more is a surefire red flag).
We are a team of 9 engineers, 2 product designers, and 3 product managers. We are passionate about best practices and clean, maintainable code (never be afraid to refactor!).
We value everyone's opinion. You won't just build products; you'll help decide what the product is!
A typical day includes:
Coding HAML, SCSS, Backbone, Javascript Pushing and reviewing pull requests on Github White-boarding problems with your team (and pairing on the solution) Discussing UX, customer flows, and interactions with designers, product managers, and engineers Participating in facilitating user-testing, locally and remotely Hanging out with our chat bot on Flowdock (who also does all our deploys) Next Steps
If we sound like a fun team you'd like to work with, shoot us your resume/github profile and a few words about yourself and what you're looking for. If you have examples of work where you contributed not only to the front end development, but also to the design, we'd love to see that. Even if you don't necessarily meet all the requirements, we value passion, a fun-loving attitude, and a willingness to contribute and participate in a team environment more than anything else.
