Job Description

Description

UX Designers are responsible for conceptualizing usable, useful, and emotionally engaging user experiences. They accomplish this by iteratively improving designs based on user insights from research and testing, as well as integrating contributions from their teammates.

Natural UX Designers are selfless and compassionate towards users. When facing adversity, they communicate dispassionately and diplomatically. They have a zeal for self-improvement, and their inquisitiveness drives them to experiment with new approaches. In addition, UX Designers are eager for feedback and coaching from senior team members.

Successful UX Designers frequently engage in activities that help them learn about user workflows and behaviors. They design efficiently using the right technique(s) for a given problem, and with a clear progression from physical/low-fidelity to digital/high-fidelity. Over time, user feedback and product metrics (user adoption, satisfaction, and retention) should improve from their efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Assist or facilitate design sessions with product managers, developers and others
  • Create design solutions based on business requirements and user research
  • Assist or lead user research activities, such as interviews, contextual inquiries or testing
  • Collaborate and integrate contributions from Researchers, Writers, and UI Designers
  • Seek coaching and apply feedback from senior team members
  • Plus any other responsibilities deemed reasonable and necessary by management

Keep in Mind

  • This role reports to the Manager of User Experience Design on the User Experience Team
  • This role is based in the Houston corporate headquarters
  • This role may require occasional travel (~5%) to user locations for research and testing activities
  • This role is not a developer, marketing, graphic or print design position

Qualifications

Must-Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction or a related discipline, such as Computer Science, Information Science, Web/Visual Design, or Psychology
  • Familiarity or demonstrated experience (from work or school projects) with some design techniques, such as: contextual inquiry and interviewing, task analysis, personas, user testing, sketching, paper or digital prototyping, heuristic reviews and using design patterns
  • Ability to communicate usability theory and principles when analyzing designs
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity or experience with digital prototyping tools such as Axure, Balsamiq, Invision or similar
  • Currently be enrolled in an academic program and scheduled to graduate in 2019.
  • Be legally authorized to work in the US on a full-time basis and not require sponsorship for an employment visa now or in the future.

Nice-to-Haves

  • A basic understanding of common web technologies (HTML, JavaScript, CSS)
  • Experience working on a collaborative design team or in a software environment
  • Master’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction or a related discipline, or 1-4 years of work experience applying user-centered design techniques

How to Apply

Submitting a cover letter and an online portfolio with your application is required. Strong portfolios describe problems, users, techniques, your individual contributions and results. Demonstrating your ability to successfully apply different design techniques – and not just showing pretty pictures – is crucial.
