Job Description

Nature and Variety of Work

The Prince George's County Health Department is seeking qualified applicants to fill multiple Counselor I/II positions, grade A-18/21, within its Behavioral Health Services Division.

These are entry to full performance level professional positions, whereby the incumbents provides counseling services and assistance to individuals who are suffering from emotional, behavioral, and substance abuse disorders, and are involved in the court system and Prince George's County Department of Corrections clinics and Jail Based Substance Abuse Treatment program.

Examples of Work

* Provide group, individual, and family counseling to clients with emotional, behavioral, and substance abuse disorders;
* Screen/assess and refer clients to alcohol, drug, and behavioral health treatment programs;
* Schedule intake appointments with clients and clinics;
* Develop treatment plans;
* Consult with parole and probation agents to obtain information before making referrals;
* Maintain contact with treatment provider(s) to monitor clients' progress/discharge;
* Develop and maintain clients' case files, evaluations, and status/progress reports; and
* Perform other tasks and duties assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description; however, are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Social Work, Social Services, Sociology, Psychology, or other related fields; plus experience in counseling. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. EACH APPLICANT MUST INCLUDE INFORMATION THAT CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES THE REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION.

Additional Information

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Social Work, Social Services, Sociology, Psychology; plus one (1) year of experience providing counseling services to clients with emotional, behavioral, or substance abuse disorders.

Applicants must have one of the following licenses:

* LCPC: Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor
* LCADC: Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor
* LGPC: Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor
* LCSW-C: Licensed Certified Social Worker - Clinical
* LCSW: Licensed Certified Social Worker
* LGSW: Licensed Graduate Social Worker
* CAC-AD: Certified Associate Counselor Alcohol & Drug

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Upon selection, the candidate must:

1. Pass a thorough background investigation.

2. Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

DURATION OF ELIGIBILITY: Candidates will be selected from a temporary register of eligibles, which will become effective approximately four (4) weeks after the closing date. Once a selection has been made, the register will expire.

ELIGIBILITY TO WORK: Under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, an employer is required to hire only U.S. citizens and lawfully authorized alien workers. Applicants who are selected for employment will be required to show and verify authorization to work in the United States.
