Job Description

This leader is responsible for the overall success of our press as well as distribution of our news products and commercial print. PressWorks Ink prints Newspapers like the Reno Gazette Journal, Nevada Appeal, and Tahoe Tribune just to name a few. PressWorks Ink is seeking a Production Manager for our Carson City production facility. This leader is responsible for the overall success of our press as well as distribution of our news products and commercial print. PressWorks Ink prints Newspapers like the Reno Gazette Journal, Nevada Appeal and Tahoe Tribune, to name just a few. If you have proven leadership ability, experience in a plant environment and, most importantly, print production experience, we want to hear from you. 

Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):
 
  • Oversee the success of Pressroom Manager and Distribution Manager 
  • Assists in budgeting and controlling expenses on newsprint, ink and plates, chemicals and solvents and other operating supplies, services of outsiders, uniforms and towels, trash removal, press, distribution payroll, trucking and hauling
  • Prepares master production schedule for plant under their jurisdiction, on a weekly basis, in time for weekly staff meeting
  • Works closely with Pressroom Manager, Distribution Manager on scheduling of jobs, plant and equipment maintenance, payroll control, and quality control
  • Responsible for implementing formal maintenance schedule for each department under their jurisdiction and to follow-through to see that schedule is followed
  • Maintains and controls parts inventory for all departments under their jurisdiction, working closely with other plant managers to avoid unnecessary duplication, especially on larger, more costly parts.
  • Acts as liaison between plant and suppliers for purchase and replacement of all parts which are ordered only with their prior written approval
  • Works directly with clients on major production/scheduling problems.  Handles such problems by effectively coaching Pressroom Manager, Distribution and Building 
  • Oversees vehicle/delivery movement of rolling stock assigned to plant they oversee, including implementation of regularly scheduled maintenance, day-to-day expenses, general upkeep and appearance
  • Works closely with all pressroom personnel to control waste to acceptable percentages
  • Prepares weekly summary production report figures for all departments under their jurisdiction in time for summary report to be made up for weekly staff meeting
  • Reports inventory figures at end of calendar month for PWI and reports figures to General Manager at close of business on the fifth day of month
  • Assist Commercial Print Sales Account Manager as needed
  • Works closely with General Manager to control and procure newsprint;  maintains accurate record of on-hand and in-sight rolls;  coordinates overages and short conditions on sizes with other plants
  • Conducts weekly informational meetings with Press and Distribution employees
  • Works with Pressroom Manager to be certain production schedule is filled in completely, legibly and on time
  • Ensures that a safe, clear, orderly and professional work environment is maintained
  • Keeps department job descriptions current
  • Prepares and tracks annual budget
  • Reviews and evaluates department personnel on scheduled dates
 
Qualifications:
 
  • Degree or equivalent required
  • Minimum 8 years experience with press, prepress and insertion environments
  • Minimum 4 years substantial supervisory experience
  • Overall understanding of all facets of newspapers
  • Ability to organize and prioritize to meet deadlines
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English well
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to use office equipment, including but not limited to computer terminal, calculator, copier and fax machines, multi-extension telephone
  • Strong written, verbal, analytical, innovative and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of company products and services
  • Proficiency in word-processing and spreadsheet packages
  • Valid driver's license and own vehicle
  • Clean driving record from the DMV
