The Manager, Respiratory Care Services provides overall leadership, administration, and coordination of patient care services for the department of Respiratory Care Services and participates in the development, management and growth of the facility.  Serves as an advocate for quality patient care and service excellence. Plans, coordinates, controls, directs and evaluates patient services in the Department of Respiratory Care Services and the delivery of those services.  Works collaboratively and serves as a resource to clinical staff, administrators, the community and physicians.



  1. Facilitates the coordination and integration of interdepartmental and intra-departmental care and/or services. Participates in interdepartmental or multi-disciplinary groups to ensure that department’s services are effectively integrated into organization’s system for delivering patient care.


  2. Establishes, implements, and maintains department specific policies and procedures to include quality assurance, environmental health and safety, and infection control standards to achieve established goals and regulatory standards.


  3. Ensures hiring of qualified licensed staff to perform the duties required of the department; assures their continued competency in these services; conducts annual performance assessment; and assures that the department has a sufficient number of qualified staff to perform the services as required. 


  4. Develops or participates in budget approval process including revenue, expense, and FTE budgets. Ensures that the department operates within the budgetary guidelines and reports variances as directed. Develops and implements strategies for cost management.


  5. Monitors performance improvement activities to improve delivery of services, assures fiscal responsibility and enhances outcomes. Supports the continuous quality improvement process by maintaining quality improvement standards, including periodic review of policies, procedures patient records and care plans.  Analyzes strengths and weaknesses and identifies opportunities for marketing and service improvements.  Measures patient and physician satisfaction and communicates results to employees.


  6. Ensures that employees are oriented to the department and hospital, including safety and infection control policies and procedures.  Provides for the professional development of self and staff through participation in seminars, workshops, professional affiliations and educational programs to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.  Collaborates with others responsible for organization-wide education to assure learning needs are identified and addressed. 


  7. Assesses areas of opportunity for improvement and service, and develops an action plan to implement these improvements.  Leads team in goal setting, developing productivity and quality standards, writing policies and procedures, managing cost, and record keeping.


  8. Insures that the operation of the Department complies with the standards established by regulatory agencies such as the Illinois Department of Public Health, OSHA and JCAHO/HFAP; coordinates the preparation for inspections, conducts mock inspections, ensures appropriate records are maintained.  Responsible for adherence to Department safety, environment and infection control standards.  Understands, articulates and ensures compliance with the National Quality Forum Patient Safety Practices as well as patient safety practices that may be mandated by any regulatory agency.


  1. Evaluates performance of existing equipment; research and incorporates new trends in Respiratory Care market, technology and economic climate into strategic decisions.   Recommends purchase of new equipment and ensures proper supply of all durable and disposable equipment for improved service delivery.  Oversee preventative maintenance, repairs and obsolescence programs for all program equipment.  Introduces and demonstrates new techniques, equipment and research findings to Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCPs).

    Education and/or Experience                                                              

    Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Respiratory Therapy or related field required. Three years of supervisory experience required.


    Advanced degree in Management preferred. Five years as a Respiratory Therapist preferred.


    Computer Skills                                                          

    Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, Meditech Order processing systems; computerized ABG testing equipment, Kronos Payroll systems and Visonware productivity software required.


    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

    Registered Respiratory Therapist with a current Illinois License required. Basic Life Support and CPR certification required.


    Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification preferred.
